Well, my 12 year old son, husband and I have been doing research and finally started our official "geocaching quest". We found 3 on our first trek, and were feeling pretty good, but have had one dnf that we haven't given up on yet. (any advice on "bridge to nowhere" is appreciated. Found the bridge, can't find the cache.) Last weekend we found a cache on Rugged Island in Resurrection Bay, and I'm pretty sure we were the FTF. (didn't even really know what that meant until I found this forum today and started reading some of the threads. Did I say we were newbies.) So, I have a couple of questions. How do I find out about geocaching events/gatherings, etc in Anchorage? I really want to encourage my son's interest, and this is something our whole family can do and enjoy together. We're looking forward to hiding our first cache, after we get a little more experience and more familiar with the rules, etc. That's why I think meeting other geocacher's would be helpful. Also, is there any remote chance of buying any Alaska geocoins? I saw the pictures on the website, but couldn't get the link to work to buy some. I know it's pretty late in the year so expect they're all gone, but it never hurts to ask. thanks for your help, summ01

Welcome to the addiction, er, affliction, er, whatever!!!
"Bridge to Nowhere"...I looked at the cache page and didn't see a "did not finish" (DNF). Perhaps if you log your DNF, the cache owner (Scobey) would be willing to give you a nudge. We log all our cache hunts because sometimes a DNF is the most useful type of log, alerting the cache owner there may be a problem with the cache. On the other hand, sometimes we just miss the cache (once, twice, or more times). We've logged over 200 DNFs and they keep racking up. No shame there...just the way the game goes sometimes.
Anchorage Events: Go to geocaching.com, click on "Hide and Seek a Cache," choose "Alaska" from the pulldown menu toward the center of the page, and future events are at the top of the list.
Let's help clean up the camps!!!!!! by oleruns (GC1EBEV) is a working session with representatives who want to work with geocachers to identify homeless came locations in city parks. This would be a good event for you to attend because not only would you get to meet other cachers, you will also get to meet municipality officials who have been very supportive of geocaching. The event is on August 21.
MIDNIGHT SUN Ship Tour by sunyruss (GC179K9) is a recurring event that is a tour of a container ship in Anchorage. People who attend log it very positively. The next tour is August 26.
Other events will be scheduled as geocachers are moved to hold them.
Re: Alaska Geocoins -- all are currently sold out. Keep watching these forums for announcements of the next coin editions.
See you on the trails!

Oooops...You're right OMGCrew! I forgot there were two caches by the same name in Anchorage, but there it is just a few lines down in Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK) when I entered "bridge" in the "name search." Summ01, you can try dropping a note to akjdawg through his profile and hopefully he'll give you a nudge. It is a somewhat tricky hide, so you may want to try others before circling back to it. You're in good company with not finding it, so don't be too discouraged.

Thanks for the info. I did in fact ask for a nudge, and Yipee! ;DI found it. It really makes a difference when ya kinda know what your looking for, (size, color, etc.) Really love being able to share this with my son. It's something we both enjoy, which makes such a difference nowadays, if ya know what I mean. Thanks again.
