Looks like the homeless folks beat the trailwatch folks in finding a resolution to the homeless camp / garbage problem over by Campbell Creek. Too bad is came at a cost of what used to be (and I'm sure will someday again be) a beautiful trail system as well as the potential for loss of human and wild life. Both sad and discouraging.............

Click here for breaking story: Crews battle wildfire south of Tudor Road Maybe Ole's right that TrailWatch is broken...I reported a HUGE camp south of Tozier Track after finding "Halfway" over a month ago. 'course, I'm assuming the fire originated there...could have been kids messing with fireworks, a different camp, or another source all together. Will wait for the apparent cause reported by the fire department.

The latest reports have the blaze moving away from any structures or homes. So your home may be safe, MTboy. One of my coworkers also lives very close to the fire location and left work early in case she needed to evacuate her belongings.

I reported the same place to trailwatch back in March after doing Halfway as well. Marked the coordinates and explained that a burn pit had already been created by the bums to dispose of their garbage. I think the trailwatch program isn't broken, more like overwhelmed! As we all know, the homeless camp population in Anchorage is ever growing and the places most of them end up staying become biohazards due to uncleanliness and disease. This obviously takes time, training and equipment to deal with. Unfortunately, there just isn't a task force in place that can deal soley with this problem. Maybe the public outcry that hopefully will come from this, will prompt the Municipality to stand up, take notice and find some funding to deal with this problem.

My earlier post with the reference to the TrailWatch program being "broken" was probably out of line. TR is right about limited resources to clean up after the squatters (no pun intended) are moved off their locations. That said, I bet the cost of knocking down today's fire far exceeded what it would have cost to remove the reported camps and establish routine patrols to keep the camps from being reestablished. I just went to the TrailWatch trail reports webpage and saw that it had been updated since the last time I visited several weeks ago. All of my reports of homeless camps and a few others have been logged and forwarded to Community Work Service, APD, and Anchorage Responsible Beverage Retailers Association (ARBRA).

I originally reported this camp to Trailwatch back on March 12th or so. I got a call back from them around March 18th and was assured they were taking care of it.
I am not at all impressed with the muni's willingness or ability to do anything about this problem which is definantly not limited to east Anchorage. Today I will be placing some calls to Trailwatch, and several other offices looking for answers.

I talked to the city about camps a week or two ago. I know John pretty well who is in charge of Trailwatch and he said they just don't have the funds needed and Anchorage Responsible Beverage Retailers Association (ARBRA). is overloaded. They need to buy 4-wheelers and a flatbed truck. I didn't want to sound like I was anti-city like they didn't care but I was just looking at results in my label of broken. This fire may be a good thing in the long run (It looks like no lives or homes were lost when I wrote this)

I'm on vacation now, and saw that there had been a fire back in town over near where I lived, and came here to see if more was availble here then on ktuu.com and now realize exactly where this one started, sonce I too reported this homeless camp also way back in February. I agree with what ole said though that this may be a good thing in the long run its just a shame it took this to wake people up.
