Today on my bike I was going by Cals and noticed there was a cache close by so I went in after it. I took my bike with me to the woods and started my search. I wasn't in there a minute when two young punks about 18-20 with pit-bull were bounding down after it. I darted back to my bike when the first punk was about 15' away.... "Oh, is that yours?", he said. "Yes, $#%^& face!" I told him.
Do you all think or is there a way to see if we can get it so more caches are not placed in those woods? That area is dangerous. By the way LBK that trash is still there so the trail watch system is broken.

Thieves, pit bulls, brown bears, homeless encampments, trash... Chester Creek is unkind to Oleruns (& everyone else)! It's certainly not a stellar experience for Anchorage visitors, eh?
I think perhaps the key to caching the Chester Creek zone is to bring a redshirt* with you...
Seriously though - that's not a 'friendly' area through there, and my one cache in that zone (120 Steps, towards the west end of the creek) has many references in its logs to muggles of the less savory sort being seen around the creek trails and parks. I suggest caching that area in group force as a matter of personal safety.
(*redshirt - see the June 2008 photo caption contest for an explanation in saidbystacy's entry)

Wow, Oleruns! That's quite the experience...especially given that you were outnumbered.
While I sympathize with Olerun's negative experience near "Go See Spot," I don't agree with giving up on certain sections of Anchorage's trail system. If every section of trail and park that had an illegal act commited in it was designated off limits to caching, I doubt we'd have very many places to play.
I believe if people consistently report any unsavory activity that critical mass will be achieved and something will change. On the other hand, if people don't report incidents (Oleruns didn't say whether a 911 call was placed to report the attempted theft of his bicycle and whether a police report was filed), law enforcement has no reason to be checking out an area and sweeping out any miscreants.
Re: The remaining garbage/camp remnants...I'll check them out when I return from Valdez, take some photos, and re-report through TrailWatch.
Let's take back our trails and parks and keep them safe!

Mace is always a good option as well. One of the basic rules of gun handling is don't point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy and I'm thinking theft of a bike is not a justifiable killin offense. I agree with Ole. I think the trail watch system was created with good intention but the problem is just to great to enforce. I reported the homeless city right in the backyard of public works back in March and nothing has been done. It's not like it's hidden either. They are complete with their own dump site which they have attempted to burn several times over. It's disgusting and right off the trail...not hidden in anyway. Right across from the dump center is at least 10 tents all with bottles and trash strewn around them. Yuck! I think we should all take turns going in there in groups with air horns and mace hourly through the night. Maybe they'll get the hint but unfortunately they'll just move to another area!

If they're stealing something that's yours, why not shoot em?

What about a TAZER! That might get the point across to leave! I agree with other posters about the homeless camps. I've tried to avoid the active places when placing caches after our Torterous Slog cache this winter. So far just "old camps" and lots of trash! I agree someone is just turning an eye to the problem. hence the fires. Sure glad it was a wet cool summer or we could have had a very nasty fire season.
