I believe it is six dollars for non members. Bring a compass and a whistle. Don't worry if you don't have those things.

These meets are a lot of fun and very informal. There are usually four or five different courses for people of all abilities. The White course is usually less than two miles in length and all controls are on the trails. Yellow, Orange, Green and Red courses increase in distance and the amount of cross-country navigation required with the Red course usually being about five to six miles in length with mostly cross-country navigation required and controls placed at tough to find features (kind of like geocaching, but at least the controls are bigger than an ammo can, colored bring orange and white, and hung above the ground). I'm hoping to be there with the junior ladybugs at 5:00 p.m. to do the white course and then I might try the Green course if anyone would like to team up. The cost is $5 for members of the Arctic Orienteering Club and $6 for nonmembers. And, you get to take home a very detailed map of the park the meet is held in.

I am trying to make it. Just have to seek approval first. After doing the disoriented cache I think I am hooked.

It was good to see MTBoy and Malcore out there tonight. Malcore had so much fun, he did two courses. We chased the junior and mother ladybugs around the White Course and then Malcore and I did the Green course together. MTBoy did the Red course. Next Wednesday night, the course will be in the Pia_Margrethe Park area off the end of Klutina (close to Olerun's " Rock Lobster" cache. You'll get to learn the lay of the land where the tank trails traverse the lower Chugach east of Muldoon Road. Start times are between 5 and 7 p.m.

I had a great time out there. Got lots of good exersize also. I always wanted to see how orienteering was done. Looks easy enough to understand once you learn the basic terms and know how to read the maps. They do have realy detailed maps, they would be good for caching also. Thanks ntboy for telling me about it. And thanks LBK for letting me tag along to see how its done. I would recomend this for anyone that wants to get out and get some great exersize.

Whateveryouwant was also there completing the red course in a much more "Linear" fashion...
We might be able to volunteer to take down the flags one week...the adventure racing club has done that before and it helps the club out. It is a good way to practice navigating. If there is interest I can contact the club to find out when they need help.

Good idea!
Can't start the course take down until 9:00 p.m., but it's be a way to find more controls in the same amount of time since one would be taking down controls from several different courses at the same time.

Is there anybody else interested in this as a possiblity? Not this week...I'll be in Valdez. But the next week at Far North Bicentennial Park would be a possibility for me. Whateveryouwant is hosting the meet on May 28.

"Paul's Orienteering Meet : May 28, Bicentennial park. Mile 1.1 Campbell Airstrip Road. Starts are from 5-7pm. For more information contact Paul Carson at 337-1435 or visit www.oalaska.org. (There is a detour on the Campbell airstrip road, but it shouldn't be much of a wait...but give yourself a couple extra minutes just in case)." Whateveryouwant is the meet organizer this week. I talked to him about helping tear down the course Wednesday night. He was excited for the help. I will be there around 6 to actually compete and then around 7:30 begin assisting with whatever needs to be done. Depending on the number of people still out on the course we will start breaking the course down at around 8. It is $6 if you are a non-member to compete. There are beginner through advanced courses. And for the deal of the century: IT IS FREE TO VOLUNTEER, YES FOLKS YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST! Lets get some of the geocaching community out to help out a fellow cacher (it takes about 40 hours of his time to do this) and learn a new skill! Bring a trash bag as well and we can make it an educational and civic minded geocaching outing! I know there are a lot of cachers that don't read these posts, so pass it on! Northwes, a big billboard would be nice. If you have questions email myself (hull.darren@gmail.com or ladybugkids (I don't know his email of the top of my head). It is off trail exploring so bring appropriate footwear (think mud and thorns). The cleanup will be educational so don't worry about being a speed deamon. We are out to have fun! Sorry about the LBK length post. Perhaps I have spent too much time in his tutelage. Bring a compass and a whistle if you have one. Darren 907-529-8985 Edited by LBK to correct the date.

The start area is at Mile 1.1 of Campbell Airstrip Road, on the right just after you cross the creek. For geocachers, park near Jonathan's Cache. The Ladybug Kids family will go around the White Course at 5:00 p.m. and will be happy to show you how it's done on a course that is almost entirely on trails and will take 20-30 minutes to complete. Then I'll do either the Green or Red courses, which will take between one and two hours to complete, probably starting at around 6:00 p.m. if anyone wants to get some additional exercise. I'd welcome the company...two sets of eyes and two brains are always better than one. For Wednesday's format, you get to choose your start time up until 7:00 p.m., so even if you work until 6:00 p.m. or later, you can still participate.

For those of you non competative types, plan on showing up around 8 to help whateveryouwant in taking the course down. I will be willing to teach a little about orienteering. 529-8985 is my number. Give me a call and let me know if you are going to help. I don't know everybodies faces and thanks to ole people don't really know if I am a moose or a bear. It would be a shame to not connect. Thanks!

Tundra Tim has proven he's more than a one trick pony...he posted the fastest time on the Yellow Course in FNBP last night.
MTBoy finished fourth on the Orange Course, less than thirty seconds out of third and just over a minute out of second.
The next orienteering meet will be Wednesday, June 11, in Storck Park (Clark's Road just off Rabbit Creek Road). The start is at 6:00 p.m. There are also at least five caches in the Section 36 area covered by the meet, so here's a great opportunity to get a nice map of the area.
After that, there will be a meet on Wednesday, June 18, at the Milepost 1.1 parking area on Campbell Airstrip Road. You can pick your start time between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
