This is probably a bit of an etiquette question, but I'll post it here, please move if you like. What is considered the proper exchange on TB's? I was under the assumption that TB's could be picked up or dropped off without an exchange, unless the cache posting requested otherwise. Like "Please exchange TB's one for one so there will always be TB's in this TB hotel". Is my assumption correct or should you always make them a 1 for 1 exchange?

I think it depends. The reason why I post that rule on my TB exchange is because some people come by, take all of them, and don't leave any. A TB exchange doesn't have any purpose when there are no TBs in it. I get especially annoyed when cachers come by, take three TBs from my TB exchange and leave nothing, when I have a specific rule against it clearly on my cache listing.
I think your assumption is correct, because nobody always has a TB on hand, so to take a TB out of a regular cache (not a TB hotel), you don't have to put one back, but it is always good to leave a good trading item to replace it. Trading up is one way to help a cache get quality contents.

I don't think anyone will be mad if you move the TB along. When I am leaving the state I will start trading for TBs so that I can bring a few back here. So that is never 1:1 and may be some geoswag but I try to make it something people will want and not marbles or something like that.
I don't know if that helps - Ole

According to the pinned How To Log A Travel Bug or Geocoin, A PRIMER IN TRAVEL BUG LOGGING geocaching.com topic written by TB Moderator Eartha, "A TB is not a trade item, you do not have to put something in the cache to take a TB, and you should not take something from a cache in trade for a TB. Should you take something from a cache, place the TB and a trade item." One can substitute "geocoin" in the previous quote, as well. Additional discussion appears in this gecoaching.com What's the protocol when taking/leaving a TB? thread, so if you can help move the TB along to its goal, go ahead and take it. Many TBs don't have their goals traveling with them, so pick them up anyway and then check out the TB's goal online. Most TB owners are just happy to see their bugs get logged, even if they move only a little ways. Caches that have a take one/leave one policy run the risk of becoming TB prisons. This topic has been discussed at length in the geocaching.com Travel Bug Prison forum and the bottom line is that the TB's goal always takes precedence over any cache rules. I know I wouldn't like it if I had a TB that stayed in a cache longer than it had to because cachers kept passing it over due to not having another TB to exchange for it. Several TB hotels that work very well without a minimum residency requirement are the Fairbanks Travel Bug Drop Box, the Anchorage TB Drop, and the Stargate P61149 TB Cache.Bottom line...those bugs are meant to move!

If it is a TB Hotel or a specific TB exchange cache, take one and leave one. If it is a regular cache, you can take it to move it along. I would rather see mine moved than to sit on the top of some mountaineering/climbing cache for months on end. If I have nothing to exchange I will leave some $$$$. If nothing at all to exchange, I will just log as discovering it. I also mention the cache it was discovered in to give the owner an update. I do the same process for GOcoins.

Thanks everyone for your input, it just seems to be the common sense approach I already had. TB stands for "travel" bug, not "trade" bug and the goal of the owner is always the priority but that generally includes getting mileage.
I've picked up bugs and left nothing when I could help it reach it's goal (like taking George TBNKZ3 to Prudhoe Bay), but understand how a TB hotel could be emptied by takers.

By the way, the above etiquette also applies to traveling geocoins.

I changed my cache listing rule to always leave the exchange with at least one travel bug inside.
