Thought I'd give folks a chance to brag on their benchmark recoveries on a thread in this forum as well - and leave the benchmark forum for the more arcane questions and discussions... So - I just returned from a visit to New York City. In one short day I 'found' 27 benchmarks (plus confirmed one as 'destroyed') - more than double my previous one-day find record. Most of those marks were easy 'intersection stations' such as the antenna on top of the Empire State Building, the top of a church spire/cross, or the top of the Holland Tunnel Breather structure. However, there were some unique ones - bolts, chiseled Ts or squares, and the ubiquitous bronze USGS mark as well. Best part of these finds was that Mrs NW & Beluga183's New York sightseeing was virtually unimpacted by my benchmark recovery passion! That city visit put me over the 300 benchmarks 'found' mark quite handily...

[glow=red,2,300]Congratulations, Northwes!!! [/glow] In many cases, a benchmark is A LOT harder to find than a cache.

I'm at a cache to benchmark find ratio of 2.07 to 1... kind of an odd ratio - and I confirmed a couple of more 'finds' from last Thursday in email conversation w/NYC benchmarkers last night*, so that day's total count 'found' is up to 30 - wow - New York City's one of the few places where I've seen the benchmark density per square mile actually higher than the cache density per square mile!
(*I had to check with the 'locals' to make sure my identification of three buildings was correct, as I saw them after dark...)

First for the intensive benchmark findings, and secondly for having the intestinal fortitude to maneuver in downtown NYC.

I'm up for a return trip to that area specifically to benchmark. Bayonne NJ had no recoveries at all, and there's a good two dozen marks there (and no geocaches - maybe the jersey mob prohibits geocaching... ) Of the four marks I logged on Staten Island, three were 'first to recover' logs. Manhattan has been pretty well covered by Papa_Bear_NYC & Harry Dolphin, but there's a lot of urban territory around there untouched. Yeah - I can hear 'ole Blue Eyes singing it, New Yorker!

Check out Holograph's website listing "Notable Recoveries" - it shows the Ladybug Kids' recovery of 'Prudhoe 3' as the Northernmost Station recovered! (previously, the Northernmost was the disk on Montana Creek Bridge... ) Good job, Ladybugs!See it here for yourself: www.holoscenes.com/special/geocac/ngs_stats.html

Now that furthest west/east is going to be tough... '72 Olympics used to get out to Shemya, but he's retired from the AF now. I wonder how we'd do it???
