Hello.
If all goes well, a friend of mine will take up a geocoin on a Shuttle mission at the end of this year or early next. He's helping build the space station, and he and I have been best friends for years.
Is it possible to turn this into some sort of event? There is a NASA link that gives the lat/long of the shuttle at any given time when it flies over land for people to try and spot it. It should orbit about 120 times or so.
I've been musing on how to create a cache for spotting the shuttle, and therefore the geocoin it will carry, but I'm a little stumped. Any ideas?

Boy, I would love to make this work!
You have to post an event at least 2 weeks out.
The problem as you know, the shuttle tends to miss the first window or two. Also the launch time will change the orbit by many miles, thus making us not see it.... or able to see it.
BUT we do know when and where the space station will be at a given time! Alaska doesn't get to see it often and when we do it is low south. So that would make us have to be in a place with a good look to the south. NorthWes has a great cache for that out at Kincaid.
So here is the plan: T-Minus 13 Days we post an event as close to the end of the mission as possible that has a viewing opportunity at the Chalet. If it's in the summer, we are toast because of daylight. Maybe he could take a picture of us from space?
The shuttle is the most awesome thing I have ever seen or felt. If you get a chance to see a launch, do it. Your friend is in for a wild ride!

Oleruns idea is great - an actual event to make the attempt to see the shuttle.
My thought was a time restricted virtual. I was thinking something like having to be at the shuttle coordinates as it passes. This might require wireless internet.
But I love the idea of trying to get a photo of the group from space - that would be hilarious.

You don't think he would mind taking my mirco racer along, I should win that way!
Thanks a million, Ole
