Here is the idea: Everyone that wants to play will use the new Alaska micro geocoin. Give the coin a name like "Walter" and set it free. The coin that has the most mileage at the 2007 Christmas Geoevent wins. I am willing to pony up for a 2007 geocoin that will be the prize to the winner.
We can have a website to check on progress but it will not be live, just updated now and then.
I think the only rule would be that the coin is placed in a cache by the owner and someone else has to move it from there. That should prevent someone from mailing it someplace. Unless people don't care? The winning coin should have a bunch of miles on it.
Ideas??

Im all for it. I just picked up a bunch of the coins and will be setting them loose this year so this will make a nice Idea to start out the first one.
Along with a individual name for eash coin maybe somthing like "Great World Racer" can be added to the name so at a glance cachers can have an idea that there in a race. So for example it would be like "Walter the Great World Racer". Or somthing like that. Im not all that good at comming up with good catchie names.
Also maybe a standerd discreption to put in the goal section of the coin listing.
Just a couple ideas

Once the owner drops a coin, he/she can not return to, or refind his/her coin in the event he/she is going on a trip, just to gain mileage. One drop and then the owner is out of the picture. March 1 would be OK. Most interested should have a coin by then. Any others can start at any date after that if interested.

So what Malcore's idea of racer titles? Alaska Mosquito racer, Alaska Racer? Others......? Others have bashed the original Iditarod name, so I will too.......Iditacoin Quest 07 (Herb) or (Fred)..anything but (Sue). Or, use your own handle (Iditacoin Quest 07 powmia). Someone might be nice and type up a short description of what we are doing, and we can all cut/paste it into our description of our coin page, just the name will be different. I did not have much else to do today sitting in the rain/wind in WA drinking strong coffee.

Anyone elso going to do this race? I have a coin set up. I just need to figure out how to word its goal. It would be nice if we have a standard goal discreption that everyone can use for there coin so it wont be confusing as to who is in the race or not. Any Ideas?

March first is close huh?
I would say keep it short and simple because nobody is going to read a long story on a TB.
1st attempt:
This Alaska Mosquito Racer is entered in The Great Alaska Mosquito Migration Race. To win, it must travel as far as it can from 3/1/07 to 3/01/08. Its owner will receive the spoils of victory with your help.
Ideas or editing welcome - Ole

Here's my attempt:
This Alaska Mosquito Racer is entered in The Great Alaska Mosquito Migration Race. Alaska has more than enough mosquitoes, so we are exporting them one by one. This mosquito must keep moving or it will lay eggs in the nearest stagnant water and release a swarm of offspring that will forever haunt the cacher who hangs onto the coin for too long. To win, it must travel as far as it can from 3/1/07 to 3/01/08. Its owner will receive the spoils of victory with your help.
I'm certain NorthWes can come up with a great turn of phrase for these little buggers.

Ah, Dr Bleh may make a mutant mosquito to hunt down the cacher that holds onto the coin.

I like Ladybugkids descriptions. Just one question, I thought we were racing until the Christmas event. Did we extend to a year?

Sorry I'm late chiming in here...this is a fun idea. Here are my thoughts: Race 'til December 1 or some such date. We most certainly will have a geofest at which prizes could be awarded. Racing until March 2008 leaves us in limbo...however, it would also give us a great excuse to hold a March Event! Racer Names: They should all have the same two or three words in the title to make it possible to look them all up at once. Using the ideas given above, something like "Alaska Mosquito Racer: Fred" or "Alaska Mosquito Migrator: Fred" will work. There are currently 50 TBs out there with the word "mosquito" in their name, so we need one or two additional words to make them unique. If we do that, we just type in the search string, click on the "distance" button, and the gc.com website does all the work for us. Folks who have already named their racers can edit the TB page. Ole...why don't you make the call on the final format for the TB names. For an example of how this works, go to the Groundspeak Trackables page and enter the word "FEEP." That brings up all the Fake Green Jeeps in a contest Lemon Fresh Dog is running. I'm currently in 11th place and Scobey's in 16th in that race. I'll get a coin queued up for the start!

Just a typo on my part.... that's the editing needed part ;D
I like LBK's edits as well and I move to make them official! Seeing no dissenting votes, the motion to go with LBKs description passes.
Now for Malcore's " The Great Alaska Mosquito Migration " contest name...
All those in favor say I.... Those opposed say Nano cache... Hearing no Nano caches, the motion carried.
Name: The Great Alaska Mosquito Migration
Date 3/1/2007 to 12/1/2007 at 3:14 PM Alaska Daylight time.
Description: This Alaska Mosquito Racer is entered in The Great Alaska Mosquito Migration Race. Alaska has more than enough mosquitoes, so we are exporting them one by one. Rules - Must be placed into an Alaskan cache then moved by someone else from cache to cache.

Here Here to all the rules. And, for some racers, unfortunately, the Vegas rules (with a slight name change) might apply......"What happens in Anchorage stays in Anchorage". Now, I have to get a few coins out of quarantine, activate them and find a starting cache.

The description is the generic one and will be the same on everyone's coin...correct? I got lost on naming the coin. Is it just powmia's mosquito racer #1, #2, etc? Or, can all the names be different. You will have to forgive me, I spent 40 years with the Dept of Defense and it was not explicit enuf for me as to what I must name my coins. (Gheesh 90 more days to go).

I'll get your coins out in the morning and you should have them by Friday, Saturday the latest. Thanks for your support! Shameless plug: Those wanting/needing coins for the race can order them from the GeocacheAlaska! geocoin page. I'll be posting the sales page to the gc.com forums this weekend and the coins are sure to sell out in a hurry, so get yours now.
