Time to lighten up this thread...meet our alter ego, Alces Alces Gigas (Al, for short): My guess is that PedalPushin will exceed 200 finds! Forget about going to Disneyland! We're going to:

I'll sponsor the pool...closest one to our final total finds for the four-day trip wins a 2007 Alaska micro coin and pin set. I'll throw in one of my personal Ladybug Kids geocoins if PedalPushin reaches 500, Scobey reaches 600 and Northwes and I pass the 800 and 1000 milestones, respectively. I'll also toss in a mystery coin for the person who correctly guesses the number of Earthcaches we find. Answers must be posted by midnight, Sunday, February 18, to be eligible.
Planning this trip has been a real learning experience. We've really put GSAK through its paces, maxed out our Pocket Query allotments on geocaching.com, and become proficient at using the Caches Along a Route feature. We've created our pdb files to use with Cachemate for a true paperless experience. We're going to be navigating via laptop and MS Streets and Trips. Scobey has the smallest GPS receiver (no screen) I've ever seen that will be tied to his laptop via a USB cable. Will report back on what worked and didn't work and what we will do differently for the next cachepalooza.
Wish more of you were making the trip!

Let's see; the number of caches in Palm Springs is over 3700. The number around Temecula is 7187.
And you are all guessing under 100 for 3.5 days?

Maybe when you get back we can plan the 201 event. That will help with the coins too. I will check to see if I can host it at work - Ole

Ideally, we'll need access to the internet (DSL or wireless) to really walk through the process from start to finish with folks.

Okay, I'll bite. Since I got lucky in the baby pool, what the heck. I am guessing you will bag 120 caches total with 15 being earth caches. Have a great trip, I will be thinking about you guys while I am stuck in the office - not caching.

I'll guess 111. Not sure how many earth caches are in the area but will guess 5. Good luck and watch out for the rattlers.

Oh I thought this was being done the old fashioned way like I did it in Bellingham. Print...point...walk and drive. Ahhhhhh the marvels of the computer educated. And, I saw the photo and thought it was only one day. I will make it 126.

If you all have done the planning I think you have, you are probibly going to get 225 or so. And if you don't get at least 200 we will shut the anchorage airport down till you do. btw, can I fit in your luggage

3.5 days times 100 is 350. So the questions are can our supercachers stamina hold out and how much time will they be spending at each of the earth caches?
Caching in the lower 48 is a little bit different... Who is our math cacher?
Factoring in misses, police actions and possible Bleh interference, I will guess 232. I have faith - oh and 3 earthcaches.
Good Luck Team Alaska. I'll try to keep Bleh busy.

Caching for 3.5 days, no sleep and being true addicts, we guess a total for the group to be 169 caches with 5 earth caches. Have a great time and look forward to hearing all about it on the forum.

It's after midnight on a "day" that started at 0100 with a redeye flight out of Anchorage. We found our first cache at 1431 and finished the day with 35 finds and four DNFs. The day had an exciting finish when we were approached by two law enforcement officers while we were looking for a cache that may have been placed on tribal land without permission. We told the straight scoop about what we were up to and they sent us on our way.
Wildlife sightings included a hawk, cactus wrens, philaropes, an owl, and LOTS of blackwidow spiders. One has to be careful where they put their hands and fingers around here.
Gotta' get to sleep...wake up call comes in five hours for another day of caching in the desert.

What an awesome trip!!!
Four days, 600 miles of driving, a dozen batteries for headlamp, camera and GPS, and 181 caches dispersed through bajadas (Earthcaches are cool!), palm tree oases, pine forests, oak chaparral, and Pacific Ocean beaches. We also took time off from caching to attend the Geocoinfest in Temecula, where geocoin trading and sales were taken to a new level, and the Temecula Valley III Event that achieved MEGAEvent status when it was attended by 500 enthusiastic cachers from all around the country.
The trip breaks down like this (subject to minor changes after the logging is completed and the dust settles):
Thursday: 35 caches outside and near La Quinta and Palm Springs and being there for Northwes’ 700th find
Friday: 67 caches featuring the Pushawalla Power Trail and Painted Canyon with Team GeoRangers and being there for Scobey’s 500th find
Saturday: 42 caches featuring an earthcache in Joshua Tree National Park, crossing the Pacific Crest in the San Bernadino Mountains, attending the Geocoinfest event cache in Temecula, and night caching with PedalPushin.
Sunday: 37 caches featuring two Pacific Coast earthcaches, crossing the coastal mountains twice via the Ortega Highway, and being there for Scobey’s 600th find at the Temecula Valley Megaevent.
While a certain aspect of geocaching is about numbers like those given above, this trip was mostly about the wonderful shared experiences Scobey, Northwes, and I had along with PedalPushin, Team GeoRangers, and many, many, other southern California geocachers. We visited places we never would have seen and met lots of outdoor oriented enthusiastic people were it not for geocaching. We had fun planning this trip for the past three months and learned a lot about the planning and caching tools of the trade (TOTT) that are available.
More later as we sort out our logs and photos!

Congratulations to Tundraquad for coming within 12 of our final total cache finds and within two on the earth cache finds. Yes, we behaved like true addicts and slept only because we had to . Will get the coins into the mail after spending some badly missed quality time with the rest of the Ladybug Kids.

Did you check the weather? Meh, methinks you are not as omnipotent as you think you are. The weather couldn't have been much better...highs around 80 and lows around 50 with mostly clear blue skies. The tide low for our the two earthcaches, so we didn't even get wet except for the time I turned my back to the ocean and got smacked by a wave at the Beach Berm earth cache in Dana Point. I do concede your power over Alaska, treating me to a 110° F temerature drop between the weather we were caching in yesterday (80° F) compared to the airport temperature (-30° F) when I arrived back home.

Meh, methinks you are not as omnipotent as you think you are. I had too much to worry about than your trip. Example: Mrs. Bleh and the out of control nagging machine! She had a nasty main bus overload out of the memory board. She compensated by adding too much power to the acoustic generator and that had a catastrophic failure that made it so it would not shut off. Dr. Bleh should not build robot women!

Or, could it be that YOU have taken over Scobey as alleged by Oleruns . Pretty interesting that there was a threat of bad weather that didn't happen, which makes sense when looking back. Why would Scobey rain on his own numbers run???

It IS ABSOLUTELY the people that make geocaching a great activity! If it weren't for geocaching, I probably never would have met Mike and Wes. We had a fantastic time of planning, caching, puns, friendly ribbing and oh so many adventures, such as seeing a gecko, fox, many birds, a BEAUTIFUL desert night sky, horny toad, lizards and HURRAY, no snakes!!! We also met two Tribal Police up close and personal This was an adventure I won't soon forget: 5 milestones, many benchmarks and personal bests and GREAT friendships!!! Oh ya, and the smell of sage Thanks Mike and Wes!!!
