This is a very early shout out to anyone who may be interested in joining in on a return to Castle Mountain this summer. Last summer Malcore, OMGCrew, lemurlad, AntoniaDodge and myself ventured in to discover a cache from the Unfound list by RidgeSeeker . This was an absolutely incredible journey where strong friendships were made and some hit the highest elevations they had reached to date. We are going to return this summer and grab the benchmark at the summit. If you would be interested in going this is the forum to express your interest. There is also another from the unfound list which has a shot at a FTF (and Malcore was there for the hide so he is not eligible for the FTF) . I would like to make this a weekend event if people are interested in going. It is an incredible hike and the trail is not really difficult, it is quite long (12.8miles). We will have lunch at the Table as before (this time I would like to share the weight burden among all those going up, having ascended the mountain out of shape with 90+ lbs on my back made for a very tired me) . If you are interested please feel free to express so here. I would love to have a large group make this trip as it is among the top five caches and hikes I have experienced in Alaska. What would be a good time of the summer for you? It will have to be a trip out on Friday and all day Saturday for the hike and return on Sunday. There is a campground at King Mountain, that once was one of the nicest campgrounds in the State, but time has let its mark on it. Cache On!

Frostgiant, Sounds like it would be a fun trip I'd love to go but can't commit to anything until the mrs is done with Chemo in Sept so even my fall hunting plans are on hold. Sounds like a great hike. But can't you get in there most of the way with a ATV? Sounds like a nice hike too or mountain bike partway in to the trailhead. Maybe Malcore could be the "guide"

We did have Malcore's off-road ATV cache-mobile for the first part (less than 4 miles is drivable with the ATV) of the trip and it came in handy in a few spots, but it is just as fast to walk the trail than shuttle back and forth over the few soggy holes in the beginning. There are some squatters who live almost at the end of the ATV trail and they drive a station-wagon threw all the bramble and water holes to get to their shanty. If we take waders and stash them at the base camp where the trail ends it would work out just fine. Or simply walk around the brush where the water is. There are plenty of other obstacles ahead before you reach the table.

Just sounding an update to see if anyone is making this trip? This a great cache and has a chance for a FTF on an unfound cache along with a benchmark for all the hunters out there. There is still a bit of summer left, this will most likely be an overnight trip unless you are super adventurous and want to drive out and back in the same day that you put in a 13 mile hike. If you would like to go on this trip please post to this forum and let us know so we can plan accordingly. We do not have a set day yet, it will most likely be a Saturday with the trip out on Friday after work and the trip home either Saturday night late or Sunday morning.

Is it 12.8 miles round trip or one way? It sounds like fun. I might be interested. I'd have to try and talk my husband into it too. Might not be too hard. LOL!

Yes the 12 miles IS round trip. Actualy from where you park you can ride an ATV about 4 miles then the last 2 miles are walking only and all uphill.

This is a great hike and should be done. Unfortunately due to time constraints in my personal schedule I will not be able to put together this trip this Fall. Feel free to to go out and get these caches as the hike is awesome and the berries should be ripe right now. This is the best time of the season to be up there, just watch out for bears and hunters. Until the next trip...Cache On!
