Groundspeak is using the eventful website to recruit interest in having Groundspeak come to places in the US to promote new GPS units and the game Wherigo. I'd love to see Groundspeak come here and interact with Geocache Alaska as we learn the new game and create cartridges in our area! Groundspeak defines Wherigo as "a toolset for creating and playing GPS-enabled adventures in the real world. Use GPS technology to guide you to physical locations and interact with virtual objects and characters." The game uses GPS enabled pocket PCs or the new Garmin "Colorado." You don’t type north or click your mouse to move your character around a screen. Instead you literally move yourself in the real world and interact with objects and characters using a handheld interface. Check out www.wherigo.com for more info. Here's what we need to do as an organization to get them to come here. Click this link and demand it: eventful.com/demand/D0-001-001274066-9

I actually got to demo the wherigo software when I was at Groundspeak HQ the end of November. It's a pretty cool concept. Like a real life video game. I can totally see a whole new generation of younger cachers getting in to this one as well as it being a great educational tool if used that way. My son was quite excited about it!

This looks fun (understand 'fun' means a screaming riot of a time where I'd happily ditch work to go play an increasingly addictive game... yeah - fun - like geocaching!).
However - I'm not sure about an interactive game where I'm up against players with an avatar like TroveRover's!!! ;D
Seriously - this has real potential for Anchorage, as we're already being marketed by the Anch Convention & Visitors Bureau as a 'geocaching destination' (thanks again to Warrenpeace!). And of course I can't wait to play for my own 'fun' purposes!!!
I see there's a demo in Seattle on 1-26 at GC17XBG; hmmm... drat.... I'm scheduled to be somewhere in LA that day... drat drat drat. Time to demand an Anchorage visit by GC.com & Garmin!
Thanks for bird-dogging this, Warrenpeace!

I can see where this is going to go and I like it. but it's going to need to be cellphone,GPS and pc driven to work.
If you go to a place and fight an evil wizard and are killed, your stuff should be there for others to pick up. Or you'll see people running from invisible monsters with a gps in their hands in downtown! AHHH, it's going to kill me, run, run!
Scobey, your PT better go well.
Civil War - Atlanta - Sherman will be here soon! RUN!

Nearly 100 logged attendees, most if not all had something positive to say. I got demanding! Only took about 30 seconds. C'mon folks, make your demands heard, too. Only four people have been demanding so far which won't bring Jeremy and the gang up.

I would love to try this. From what I read it sounds like it has lots of potantal. Not sure how I could play though. I don't have a pocket pc with gps and there a bit expencieve to buy just for this one use. I don't think I could justify buying one of the new Garmin "Colorado" gps unless it does everything I ever wanted in a gps, then I would sell all my others and get it. I guess I could use my laptop and get a gps module for it but that would be tough. It would be cool to get groundspeak to come up and do a demo of it and show the new gps, so I added my 'demand' to the list.

Demand, Demand!!!
It's what will make Groundspeak turn their heads and come up here.
I'd like to chase 100 demands with an email full of adrenaline to Bryan Roth and Shauna Maggs to let them know we're serious.
I can only do it with a bunch of demands - a guarantee to Groundspeak that we're the real deal!
Thanks for your enthusiastic responses here so far.
Demands Total = 6 so far...

If you want to see the other cities we're up against and how many demands they have...
From the eventul page 1. Change location to Worldwide 2. Search "Demands" for "Wherigo"
There's a bunch of places on board right now. This morning Chicago had 21 to our 8.
I say we blaze 100 by the end of the week.
BTW... spread the word.
I want to check out a Garmin Colorado!

I did something at the site, I'm not sure what, but the number increased to 12 for whatever I'm demanding.

I looked at the individual account under "friends". Most of us have no friends. I believe that is quite humorous.

eventful.com/demand/D0-001-001274066-920 Demands in 3 days and 16 hours... Let's get to 100! I'll send that secret email to Bryan and Shauna up at Groundspeak next week regardless - nicely begging them to come, but man it would be great if Geocache Alaska would back this invitation by demanding it (curious about what a demand is... hit the link - it seems a clever way to beg for something). eventful.com/demand/D0-001-001274066-

He said that even if they didn't come to Alaska, there will soon be cartridges to use like tutorials.

240 members, 23 demands. Anyway of sending out a mass email for those who don't get to the forums very often?? The forum administrators DO have the ability to ping each member of the forums with an e-mail. No one complained when I announced the 2008 Alaska geocoins with a broadcast, so a broadcast could be done again. Do general users of the forums have an opinion on occasional broadcast announcements to forum members?

Do general users of the forums have an opinion on occasional broadcast announcements to forum members? I was not aware that the coin announcement came from the forum list. I thought it came from a previous buyers list. Now I know. As long as the mass message mailings do not turn into a convenient way of notifying everyone on the forum about every new or proposed item, I would not mind. If it developed into continual mailings I would oppose the idea. I wish I could change my notifications on geocaching.com about TB notifications. Sometimes my box fills to the max with "discovered/placed/retrieved" notices, especially when someone adds a photo to a message.

People who were previous buyers and belong to this forum probably got two notices of the 2008 coin sales. One via the all forum members' ping and one from the coinsales@geocachealaska.org account
Sounds reasonable. I could see using the all forum members ping for things that are time sensitive and fast breaking news about events, etc., that need to be broadcast. As forum membership grows and activity in the forums increases, I could see issuing a weekly digest similar to what groundspeak sends out weekly, but I don't think we're there yet.
Anyone else have thoughts on the subject?

Just don't see this whereigo thing as our cup of tea. And if groundspeak were to come to visit I'm sure it would be Anchorage and I wouldn't be able to attend. So I'm one member of the 240 that won't be "demanding" a visit.

I will probably never get involved with this due to the equipment needed, and the complexity of the operation. However, I hope I aided your plight.
