MOA Parks & Rec has once again invited GeocacheAlaska to put on an "Introduction to Geocaching" event this spring at Kincaid Chalet. Timed to occur on April 14th from 10am to noon (with a completely separate CITO Event to be held at the same place beginning at 1230pm), this event will be a '101' level presentation of the geocaching game. I expect weather to be Kincaid typical: sunny/windy/rainy/muddy/icy/snowy - all in two hours and two miles of travel!
Presentation: The past two times I've done this event, I've spent more time on 'why we geocache' than I think is necessary. Spring '07 I plan to focus more on game mechanics & ethics; I'd appreciate your input in this thread about pet peeves or areas of concern you'd like addressed (as powmia & I have had no end of grief over missing geocoins, you can bet the correct handling of those coins & TBs will be a major theme!). Please be as constructive as possible in your suggestions so as to help me figure out how to insert your idea into the 60 minutes of indoor teaching time. I'm not going to spend more than 5 minutes on GPSr mechanics! The last 60 minutes will be afield - and once again, we'll need as many 'volunteer field assistants' as we can muster. Post here if you'll help - tasks include how to get coordinates into GPSrs, how to use trails to approach a cache hide, how to 'leave no trace or direct trail' to the cache site, how to log a cache find, how to replace it (don't move it!!!) etc.
Remember - these intro events are critical to teaching new cachers the accepted way to play - and they go on to be the next generation of cache hiders for the rest of us!

I'm glad to help with this event as well as the CITO that follows. I am pretty proficient with most Garmin's but know nothing about any of the other brands.
And, yes, please stress that replacing the cache as close to exactly how you find it gives the next cacher the same experience you just had. As a cache placer, I am watching my newest one closely and maybe I'm just too anal, but it just keeps creeping closer into view. No, anywhere close to where you found it is NOT good enough. Okay, enough ranting and raving.
Thanks Wes for all you do.

I had bad Mexican and the next thing you know I didn't put AKDogMom's cache back just the way I found it... I put it back the way I found it, just not in the same spot. I admit it... Sorry -

Maybe I can bring my laptop so we can add waypoints to peoples gps insted of having to key them in by hand, thats what took me so long last year. It would make the start of the hunt faster. I have a garmin that hooks threw the usb so I have that type covered. The other types of cables would take some help with access to and setup before the event, that way it would be just a plug and go at event time.

Sorry - Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a B****. Ole I just keep thinking how much fun it's going to be to hunt my own cache come Spring. It adds a whole new dimension to caching, when you get to hunt your own. ;D

OK. Log me on as a field hand for this one also. And, as stated somewhere in the forum someplace, that will be the day for someone to state "I told you so" concerning the presence/absence of white ground cover.

I believe the new Geocacher doesn't have the knowledge about the coins and TBs that is crucial to the timely moving of everyones coins. When I first started I had to do alot of research to understand why this coin had a funky number on it. I learnt alot by the TBs and coins that had an information sheet with it. (laminated "DO NOT KEEP ME" sheet with additional info) I believe just putting the "COIN" into a cache is not giving the new cachers enough info to research what that coin is for. We as experienced Geocacher need to assist in putting information cards with our coins and TBs, also being more informative or imaganitive on the Coin or TB logs on GC.com. I maybe wrong with the above thought but it was my own experience and I am not one to "Collect" for say coins or TBs. Just a thought for you all. Hazel of Hazelsgroup

The event last year (2006) was approximately April 22 and we were able to see trash and green/brown grass. This year it is 3 weeks and 4 days away. There is going to have to be a fast, furious, and flooding break-up soon, or we will be picking up only caches. The annual spring snowfall has not yet appeared either. The day of "I told you so" soon approaches.
