I just realized (while doing research for an upcoming GeocacheAlaska! Board project) that Alaska just went over the 4,000 mark in listed geocaches - WOW!

I think we were there before but the Cavscout caches all got archived so the number went back down. I am thinking about redoing his famous anchorage EC...

We have been there a couple times. The last time we were Groundspeak archived all of Cavscouts caches and we dropped back to 3960 something. We should stay above there now.

I didn't think Cavscout had that many in Alaska.

Bet you didn't include the few Terracaches or the 172 Opencaches in the state... I'm just sayin'

Alaska can drop back below 4000 listed caches again if cachers don't respond to requests to maintain their caches. I have more than forty caches on a 30-day watch list that are about to get archived due to lack of cache owner response to posted reviewer notes. These are caches that have had "needs archived" logs posted, several consecutive DNFs without a cache owner maintenance visit confirming the cache is still there, or caches with the "needs maintenance" flag set for an extended period of time.
I know it's wintertime and some caches are hard to get to. All a cache owner has to do to reset the "grim reaper's" clock is reply to a reviewer note with a reviewer note outlining a maintenance plan. This lets the reviewer and other cachers know the cache owner is still active and has an ongoing interest in maintaining a cache that has fallen on hard times.

If there is a unique OC cache in Alaska, I haven't found the listing yet. But I've certainly not looked through all 172 of them... primarily because browsing caches on the OC site is just too cumbersome and the cache listings don't give the amount of info that GC one's do. Unless Garmin does some major upgrades to their "Beta" OC site, it is doomed to fail just because of the poorly designed "blog" format, IMHO. It was far easier for me to go through every single one of my cache listings on GC the other day and completely revamp them with new GeAK graphics and such than it was to import 40 caches into the OC site with nothing in them but a link back to the original GC listing. The few nifty ideas OC has are lost in the poorly designed site interface.
