In another thread (which I freely acknowledge is of probable higher value in terms of personal learning potential for the average Alaskan geocacher) I provided these links to "special" threads in the national forums which might be of interest to those 80% or so of Alaskans who own pets (or the 20% who don't...): Hamstercaching - for people bored with mere geocachingHamstercaching - Is it cruelty to animals? (disclosure - NorthWes has posted a graphic photo to this thread)Lest some of you think that Hamstercaching isn't a valid component of geocaching - here's a descriptive brochure from the authoritative Geocachers University: Let's go Hamstercaching!Have these provided links inspired you to consider creatively integrating your pets into your personal geoaching activities? Will the onset of hamstercaching in Alaska enhance your geocaching experience? How do you see hamstercaching coexisting with the ' Bad Bears of the BLM Lands'? Looking forward to your thoughtful participation....

Uh, NorthWes, you didn't by chance find Vinny's stash, er, cache, did you?

Okay, funny to read all those comments and see the pictures. But I REALLY hope there aren't any hampsters in caches because of it. Poor little guys. Although, we could use it as a way of keeping cachers like Malcore from getting all the FTF if the prize is a hampster!!!

I participate in the northern variation of hamstercaching known as volecaching. I can capture voles in my own yard, saving me a trip to the local pet store. Have these provided links inspired you to consider creatively integrating your pets into your personal geoaching activities? As noted above, I've incorporated voles into my caching routine. They don't present an alien species threat to Alaska and are a favorite food of several mammalian carnivores and birds of prey. I also routinely take our geoskijor hounds on cache hunts: Will the onset of hamstercaching in Alaska enhance your geocaching experience? What's not to like about sharing an outdoor experience with a cute furry mammal? How do you see hamstercaching coexisting with the 'Bad Bears of the BLM Lands'? I think seasonal hamstercaching would be prudent...stick to the months when the bears are hibernating.

Although, we could use it as a way of keeping cachers like Malcore from getting all the FTF if the prize is a hampster!!! Ahhh - Malcore! I'd quite overlooked his ongoing personal twist on caching with pets... his well-known* 'rubber duckie' sig item. Yup - you think you're fast getting out on the FTF chase - and then you see the rubber duckie's been there already. Sigh - who'd ever have guessed they possessed such speed? Such sense of location? Such panache? (well-known* - c'mon - you've all seen them - because he's always to those caches before the rest of us! )The classic rubber duckie - updated with a slightly come-hither look... What happens when 'come-hither' look duckies are left unsupervised at those dark cozy cache hides... population explosion! Seventeen years ago some 29,000 rubber duckies left the confines of a chinese freighter hauling them to a new life in America, jumping overboard in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Those duckies have brought a smile to the faces of beachcombing children & geo-scientists around the globe, as they've washed up in Hawaii, South America, Australia, and even Alaska. One intrepid pack of duckies (20,000 of them) sailed across the NorthWes Passage from Alaska towards Europe, traveling the icepack at the average rate of a mile a day - to land on the fabled shores of England! Now that's something to take notice about in this 'game of location' that we play, eh? Perhaps this is why Malcore pays homage to the rubber duckie as his sig item? (thanks to the Daily Mail for the use of their rubber duckie travel graphic from their 2007 report on these travelers)

I know Malcore has a fondness for duckies. But I think if every cache he found first had a hamster that he HAD to take. He'd wait a little before running out the door. Especially if a hamster was mentioned as the prize. But then knowing Malcore he'd just make a little outfit for the hamster and leave it as his sig. item. A hamster dressed as a ducky! Now if someone finds that cache, I'd like to see the picture!!!!!!
