I know this may be up NorthWes alley but I was wondering if we could get the paint off the signs along the Chester Creek trail /Coastal trails? I have some solvents at work that would remove the paint but I am not sure if they would damage the signs. Or would just water and elbow grease work the best? Are there people in the forum that would like to help? Could we make it an event? Ideas

OLE a group that is already trying to keep the trails nice and safe and dealing with sign issues is Trailwatch (www.muni.org/trailwatch) a free group to join and you can post information to them of any problems you find on the trails. If there is a good chemical that would work on the signs they would be interested.

Ideas I'm on the TrailWatch committee and even they are limited in resource... I executed that sign order for city parks (manufacture & installation); let me doublecheck it on Monday, but I believe those were all made with a 'graffiti-guard' overlaminate to allow easier cleaning of paint off their faces. If so, elbow grease and spray cans of brake cleaner will do the trick... but don't try it until I review the work order and make sure that's how we built 'em. (Wear proper PPE & dispose of the cleanup tools properly!) We make all the city park system signs, and on many of them it's necessary to put the graffiti guard (costs $2 per square foot more - doesn't sound like much, but they have a very thin budget). 'Necessary' because there are little thuggie gangsta kids who think it's cool to 'tag' public property with their marks - and they target the trail signs such as 'maintained by' etc. The city's excellent 'graffiti-buster' program will (usually within 48 hrs) come out and clean up / overpaint graffiti on bridge abutments etc when good citizens call in the damage to 343-8048 (or even better, when they fill out the online cleanup request form - it's easy and gives the city folks the details they need to clean it up - link is at bottom). This isn't 'kids being kids' or 'public art' - it's vandalism - willful damage of public property that we all pay for through property taxes (or higher rent...); even worse, it's often a symbol of the turf wars that go on between the city's various gangs - a visible sign of the war in the shadows that the police try to suppress (with varying degrees of success). Long story short - stamp it out by painting it out. Gangs thrive on recognition - so remove it. Good call, Ole... Graffiti Busters - at 343-8048, or online at: www.muni.org/pfm/GRAFFITI.cfm

Are there people in the forum that would like to help? Could we make it an event? Ideas Make it an event and you will have plenty of people out helping to clean up the area, not just the signs. I dont know the area very well but I would attend, help clean up then go in group for some caching. This could be done on a weekday also. Still light enough out. We must take care of our playground!

Well - I'm going to have to do this the old-fashioned way - a hands-on visit to an installation. I suspect the graffiti guard was not applied, based on the paperwork. Budgets - always it comes down to the budget, it seems. I'll see if I can look at one tonight or at latest tomorrow night.
LunaB is right too - before we do anything to muni property we of course want to coordinate (must!) with TrailWatch.
