A warning from some running friends of mine and one (the editor) is a bear biologist - Ole
Last Friday evening hikers encountered a brown bear sow and 2 cubs in the summit area of Bird Ridge. Their dog was attacked and killed. CS Park folks removed the carcass. I don't have any further information.
I went up early Sunday [today] - slowly and loudly - and saw new scat at the Sheep Perch but no other bear signs. In the past I've have encountered both grizzlies and black bears (which may be brown in color) on the upper part of the ridge. The brush this year is very thick and the site distance is often very limited. Use caution if you go and consider leaving Fido at home. Last year I encountered 3 grizzlies on the lower 1/4 of the trail.
Bottom line: bears may be anywhere on the mountain so take care. Runners are at special risk because we can come up on them so fast (especially on the downhill) which increases the chances of an unpleasant encounter.
Editor's note: the salmon are in Bird Creek now and bears will be moving up and down the Bird Ridge east slope on a daily basis.

Thanks for the warning. I was just considering Bird Ridge for next weekend when we were driving by and I did see, from the highway, some rather large bear warning signs.
I think I will choose a different spot. thanks, thanks, thanks.
