I received my Bronze Earthcache Master pin in the mail today!!! Cool!!! And FREE too!!! I ran into several cachers today while out doing the ground survey work for two earthcaches I'm developing. It's important to do an excellent job with an Earthcache, as it will be a 'target' cache for visitors from outside Alaska as well as teachers in middle and high school classrooms who're looking for geology learning 'destinations.' The placement standards for earthcaches can be seen on the website listed in Scobey's post - they're rigorous!

Two new earthcaches approved at Kincaid Park today! Yippee! The earthcache approval process is very different... it's a bit of work to do, but it's a lot of fun to set up a learning site too. Congrats to OMGCrew for being so quick on the learning curve out at Kincaid Park's Kames & Kettles Earthcache at Little Campbell Lake - he was on it with four good answers just two hours after it published! He's on his way now to earning the Earthcache Master Bronze Award... The toughest part for we Alaskans is getting an earthcache in another state! Kincaid Park's Eolian Cache is feeling very lonely... no one had logged it online by 9pm tonite... and it's easy! Just a bit of a walk in the sand, that's all... and using your digital camera, and using the GPSr's altitude function (or learning how to estimate altitude variation... a useful tool I learned in Scouting called 'timber cruising')

Is there not a lot of snow out there?? I may be able to do what I want with this cache but I can't with frozen sand.

Is there not a lot of snow out there?? I may be able to do what I want with this cache but I can't with frozen sand. "Is there not a lot of snow out there?" What does that mean? Heck, it's the first day of spring... birds are singing, flowers are blooming, grass is green... - oh wait - that's in Florida. It's snowing here on the first day of spring - true to form! And just what are you planning to do with "thawed" sand for this cache? I don't understand... and don't try emailing sand to me... it's bad for the hamsters running my computer's power source. Besides, the wind's already doing what IT wants with this dune! If you're planning to surf the dune, dude, make sure someone shoots video! *sigh* Back to work, still wondering what Olerun's up to...

....and the earthcache at Kincaid Park's sand dune still waits for its first adventurer... it's winter-friendly! Really!

Well I drove all the way out there broken camera in hand but left the print out back at work. I didn't have time to go get it and return. I have a feeling it will get visited by people this weekend.

I found an interesting earthcache at Sugarloaf Mountain - the Maryland Monadnock, an igneous mountain that rises from a flat area. It was fun and a great learning experience.

Hey! These are realtively easy "finds". Why have so few logged them? ?

Haven't you heard? The State of Hawaii has banned geocaching and the penalty for being caught with a GPS is jail time!!! Be careful! Be very careful! On second thought I guess I'll call them and let them know you are coming.

I need a phone a friend for some web-cam caches. The Hawaii five-0 can trace my phone call and book me Danno. Hey, is it five-0 because they are the 50th state or they only have 50 officers? Or is it five oh...hemm? Trove Rover is ahead of me again on finds!!! If I didn't place any, I would be way in front... If Scobey didn't place any, I would still be on my first 100!
Aloha!

The one earth cache I remember logging was a cool fossil place in Iowa. Man, that was crazy - fossils everywhere and when I am not reaching my superhero aspirations I sometimes wish I was a paleontologist... or an archaeologist, but that's a little off topic.
I have looked at the Fata Morgana earthcache and haven't really decided to put the brain work into actually "looking" for the cache. The Tidal Bore cache I could probably log, but I saw the bore before I became a cacher and haven't wanted to put the time into waiting for it again.
Anyway, the other option is that I always try to clear out the largest circle possible around my home coordinates and if an earth cache doesn't come up, it doesn't get cached.

I am coming to get my Platinum Earthcache master pin with one of your earthcaches. It's going to be the best one yet.

I'm at the gold level with 14 in the bag. We have a great selection of them here to choose from... which ones are you targeting?

I've been having fun reading about the earthcaches and learning from the descriptions, but I haven't managed to have all the pieces at the right coordinates at the same time. Fortunately, I've got an Oregon on the way, so I'll have no excuse not to get these done!
Thanks for all the efforts in putting these together. They sound demanding.

All my earthcache finds are out of state. So if I find an earthcache in Alaska (that shouldn't be too hard!) I can be a Bronze Master!

Here's the new earthcache banner: You may use it on any earthcache pages you submit or add it to existing earthcaches. To get some ideas for creating what the Geological Society of America considers a great earthcache, visit their website and scroll down to see their top 10. That page also contains links to their store and the current guidelines.

There are currently 55 Earthcaches in Alaska. They have a cool search tool at Earthcache.org that brings back a nice linked table. Here's the text list from that table... The new Earthcache guidelines will be posted at www.geosociety.org/earthcache/guidelines.htm right after the first of the New Year. Due to the popularity of the Earthcache Program, earthcaches are being reviewed by a team of Groundspeak volunteer reviewers working under the tutelage of geoaware, who works for the Geological Society of America (GSA). I will be reviewing Earthcaches for Alaska, Hawaii, and US Territories under the GeoawareUSA4 account.

I recently received my first earth cache souvenir. It says to cut and paste it to my profile page. I couldn't find scissors big enough or strong enough to cut it from the computer screen and gluing it didn't sound safe Can anyone explain this to me. I see how to cut it, but when I go to another tab, I don't see it to paste.

Go to your GC "Account Details" page. Second box down on the left side should be "Profile Details". In the top right corner of that box is a link to "Change". When you click that, you'll be taken to a page with a text box for entering HTML code for your profile. Put the cursor where you want the code to be pasted and either press CTRL-V or right click and select "Paste" from the list. Click the "Save Changes" box at the bottom.
