I have access to all the goodies, so I'm a big pansy and won't cache without mapping in the unit I'm using. I've gotten really used to it. Garmin's Topo mapping has been out of date for AGES, so when we got Topo 2008 in the store a week and a half ago I was excited but ever so slightly reserved (as I know Alaska is the red headed step child of mapping, usually). Well, it's pretty fantastic. I mean, it takes a LOT of memory - Alaska used to be 184megs to load, now it's over 800megs. That's pretty substantial. Also, it takes over 10gigs to load into a system. But it's all on one DVD which does a full install (so, no toggling of CD-Roms) and the accuracy is way better. There's also on average twice as many topo lines and the borders for state parks, etc... are much more accurate. If you get a chance to go to REI, Sportsman's Wearhouse or our store to check it out I would recommend it. I have it loaded on my lappy at work to show to customers. It's tres nice. edit: D'oh! I should have put this in the GPS Software subforum! Would a moderator move it for me so I don't feel like a big goober? Danke!

Hmmm thats interesting. What did they add to the maps that make them take up almost 5 times the room? I can understand some gain in size for updates to new roads that have been made since last version and maybe twice the size for twice the topo lines, but it sounds like there may be a lot of whats called software bloat in the new version. Im wondering if it may have a slowing down affect with such large maps. As it is I sometimes get slowdowns on the older version when im scrolling around the map on the gps.

Maybe they'd give someone a copy to test drive and do a report on here.

Is this something that we can upgrade to or do we have to buy the whole new program?

Is this something that we can upgrade to or do we have to buy the whole new program? DITTO QUESTION!!! I got the old one for Christmas... On the other hand, maybe I 'need' a new GPS to handle 2008... with that BIG WILD PFD I should be able to afford a new one, eh?

We're carrying it for about $116. That's before the rebate. I also have rebate sheet printed up here at the store. I guess $30 is better than a kick in the head.
I think the software development was a little sloppy (thus the bloated memory requirements), but when I was using it in a Rino 530 the refresh rate on my screen was actually pretty decent. I was expecting it to be way worse.
As mentioned, I have it on my lappy at work if someone wants to just check it out. Also, you could meet me. And, clearly, I am fantastically cool.
So.
