I just bumped into this software. Has anyone tried [red]GPS Tuner[/red]? I'll try it when I resume caching in OKC next week, then I'll post the results. "GPS Tuner is an off-road navigation software for Pocket PC devices. While most car navigation software gives you the possibility of planning your route based on a road network, GPS Tuner gives you the ability of navigation where the roads end. GPS Tuner is an excellent tool for hiking, [red]geocaching[/red], boating, flying, driving and many other sporting activities. "

Interesting. I see one thing that looks cool with this program. It says that you can load your GPS tracks into Google Earth and show them on the sat map. This would be good for ploting maps like for the tour of anchorage cache route. This may be worth looking into.

Things (?) are starting to become much too complicated and in- depth. I fear caching might begin to become unattractive if the field gets swamped with computer sites, new devices, new ways of tracking everything one does...on and on. I have cut back. I no longer order coins with a passion (60% of mine are lost anyway). I use to try for a FTF, but there are too many "out the door" addicts caching in the area now. Also, the area will soon be flooded with caches. Instead of 4-5/month, sometimes it is now 4-5/day. Seriously, my interest in going out has plummeted because I see there is no way to keep up. Last winter I was much more into caching mainly because the frequency of hides was much less than this winter.

I will be going to Vegas in a couple weeks and noticed that they do not have close to the same amount of caches that we do. I will only get 10 if I am lucky. Checkout Vegas, you'll see. I am a FTFer but have not had a chance the last month or so. If it's a south-side Scobey cache, it's too close to OMGCrew's area. You have to leave for the cache in less than 20 minutes after it posts to have a shot. You can't be fooled by slow posting. I almost have 50 FTFs and that would be a good number to have.

I realized when I first started caching with the Captain that I would never be a FTFer. It is hard to get out of the office in time to get to the caches. Being a mostly weekend cacher, well you all know how it goes.
It is kind of funny that my only FTF was in Iowa, and I didn't even realize it until I met another cacher on the trail who said he was looking for it. Troll Man was the name of the cache.
I didn't even have access to a computer in Iowa.

Ole, you are the best/fastest FTF cachers I have known, and your hides are good also, especially the ones with a theme. I remember one FTF you had and Scobey post a note immediately. Something like "Ole do your FTFs in your own territory...stay out of mine". I thought it quite humorous.

I checked the area in Washington state I will be going to in February. For a radius of 5 miles there were 80 caches. One was placed in 2007. There were a few in June-Aug 2006. The rest are older. If I do a "Fairbanks park and walk/ park and walk", I might get lucky. I hope to get in 2 days of caching.

Thanks!!! I am glad you like some of my hides. You should see the one I am working on that picks on Northwes a little. I wonder sometimes by some of the logs that people write. There is one in Pele that is something like: "I know the drill on these type caches..." Talk about someone that is bored with caching. Maybe they should try it with their pants on fire, that might liven it up for them. Do you make the cache real hard or easy? I like the new style caches I have been putting out, I don't think they will get muggled and not too hard unless it's your first of that particular type cache. I have another one of that style that I am going to post tonight or tomorrow, it's a lot of work building this adventure. I may call it "An adventure for powmia" at least that is the working name. Thanks - Ole

It could be on the SLOW HUMP sign in my yard and I couldn't get to it right now thanks to the suddenly busy life!!! (although I'm glad I'm not juggling the schedule Alaska's premiere pig wrangler has to balance! Sorry 'bout that, Daddy L!) I've got out to one new cache in the last 4 weeks (PLUTO - how could I miss that, since I'm in Kincaid every Saturday? ) OK - I'll stop whining and start salivating... so when can powmia and I expect a little more adventure out of Oleruns?

Oh yeah - as for GPS Tuner - haven't tried it yet. Integration with Google Earth maps sounds cool... and useful, as Malcore has noted.

I tried this program for a short time today. I'm pretty handy figuring out software as a rule and I'll tell you now...don't waste your time on this program. It is highly functional but the map function is horrid. I'm not in the mood to list all the ways that mapping will frustrate you. I'm sure there is a better program and when I find it I'll post.

I went to www.handango.com and found 8 or so different Pocket PC gps programs. I'm sure there are probably as many for Palm. Two were similar to Microsoft Streets & Maps and had 5 star ratings. I think they all allow a trial period which I have found extremely useful in deciding what to buy.

After trying 3 programs and comparing them to one I already own, my recommedation for a PDA software program is *Drum roll* Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 Yes, believe it or not it has all the functionality and ease of use needed. As we prepare to go to SoCal, I have been playing with it more. I have 2005 and it works great. The software loads to your desktop/laptop and allows you to download maps to the PDA. You can also convert GPX files to add pushpins for caches to the map in your PDA. A bluetooth GPS is fun to use with this program and interfaces well unless you are using an IPAQ which has it's quirks to figure out. Please PM me with questions.
