Hmm. Well lets see... Bug repailent First thing is my pack. Found a nice sport pack that has a built in water bladder which I usally put some kinda juice or sport water in. If I dont want to fill it I just carry a couple bottles of water in the pack part. A couple non meltable snacks (summer makes candybars into goo) Basics are Multi tool, Batterys, Pens, Camera, Cellphone, PDA. Flashlight, Bug repailent, Oh and a ziploc with some TP (just in case) Cache swag which includes TB's, Coins, Sig items (duckys) and other trinkets. Bug repailent. Extras are cache repair items. Log books, Paper, Pins, Pencils, Ziploc's, Magnets and this year a roll of Camo duck tape. A mosquito shirt and a lightweight rain jacket. Bug repailent. This year Im thinking of getting a can of bear spray, although if im caching in the wilds out of a town I carry my 44 mag. OH and did I say Bug repailent.

If I'm biking or running, carrying a pack can be cumbersome but sometimes I will use a lightweight backpack like a camel-bak, but with a lot less straps and just one pocket. I'm waiting for the snow to melt on Arctic Valley Road before I find any caches but this pack feels weightless. It's a good idea to bring a cellphone because caches can take longer than expected or put you in difficult situations.

You will not read this in your history books my young apprentice Knappling. Bug repailent was code word used in July 1947 by the US Air Force under project Blue Book in Roswell, New Mexico. If you look close, you’ll see “alien” embedded in the word. “Repailent” is also the name they gave the mist or contrail that followed the UFO before it struck the earth. The contrail settled to the earth and claimed by many that it was alien seed or spores used to take over humanity. The repailent would affect mothers who may only be months or days from giving birth. The first person of note that may have been infected or as the host in some sort of symbiotic relationship is Hillary Clinton, born October 16th 1947, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Forbes and maybe Thomas Delay as an infant. I am researching these agents to use in my efforts to take over the world. I am so close, you will all soon be under my control. But his does not explain why Malcore would use these agents? Dr - B

Long story. Today I was on Flat Top with my caching bag I was not looking for a cache, just up with some co-workers. There was a young fellow who had taken a bad step and broke his leg only 100 feet from the top. It was a long time before help was able to get there, about 3 hours. The only thing to fail was my GPS, I didn't put in new batteries and they asked for coords, argh. The item I could have used were trash bags. The kid had fallen in a little running water and we could not move him. (They also work great for CITO.) So add trash bags to the list... The chopper was on its way so I left down the hill... Maybe I will be able place a cache there someday. Pictures to come from another guy who was there.

Wow Ole, that is some story. Glad it was not you or your friends who were hurt. That would be not fun.
I broke my leg on a ski run and that was not fun either, at least I was within car access, that poor guy.
Guess we had better add batteries to the list, and extra clothes. I went into shock with my broken leg, that guy was probably not doing too well waiting for 3 hours. yikes...

Hey the story is on KTUU: G uard rescues fallen climber on Flattop by Channel 2 News staff Monday, May 28, 2007
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Alaska Air National Guard was notified by Alaska State Troopers at 12:20 p.m. that they were needed for a helicopter rescue of a climber who had fallen on Flattop.
An Air National Guard Pave Hawk helicopter arrived on the scene, approximately 200-to-600 feet below the summit. Rescuers put a 19-year-old male into a gurney and medevacked him to Providence Hospital. He had suffered leg and ankle injuries.
A name has not yet been released.

I don't know why it took 3 hours, we can get the helo's and herc's in the air in 30-45 minutes AFTER we get notified. Maybe the troopers thought they could handle it.

Maybe we should come up with a cacher's First Aid class event. Apparently it would help out muggles and fellow cachers.

I think that would be a great idea.... as we all know, sometimes a "cacher needs maintenance"
I don't know AKEMT yet is that something up his/her alley?

Now that a lot of folks know who you are, they want to know WHERE you live.

I can set up a first aid class if we get people interested, As you can tell by my handle, I have been practicing as an EMT for 23 years, and just two weeks ago, AKMICP (my twin brother) and I had to render medical aid and assist an ambulance crew. We would have to come up with a good date that people can do it on, I would need to know how many people (small groups I can use the training center for my medical team, big groups we would have to come up with somewhere). It would be a two year certification, and would take about 6 hours, the cost for the stuff and cards runs about $50 per student. If there are just a few people I can help them find courses in Anchorage or the valley.

Anouther line of thought, if people just want to get together and talk about what first aid items I would recomemnd to carry and I also happen to teach survival so we could discuss the use of garbage bags in survivial or something along those lines I would be willing to meet up and discuss these topics. At the end of June I have to go to the lower 48 for a week of classes for my military job, and I will try to write up some helpfull hints and post them when I get back.

May even be a good winter event item because everyone is busy in the summer. I guess good thing it was Flat Top but what if it was on another Peak maybe an MTBoy cache or Ridge Seeker well away from cell phones. I would like to go over a lot of what ifs. At work we are required to take first aid every two years and most would apply to an anchorage area cache injury... but what if?
Thanks a million and we'll get checking on how many people.

Thanks for the offer!

If going off main roads, I recommend adding a jack, a tow strap or two, a come-a-long, and a good friend with a big truck to the list. One should also consider heavy duty stakes and a mallet or sledge hammer in the event there is not another vehicle in the party because all the trees in the area would have come out by their roots if they'd been pulled on. I might as well self disclose since the word will get out eventually...check out this log.I had a jack and a tow strap, but PedalPushin had a JACK that could be operated above the water surface and another tow strap that when combined with mine let him pull from beyond the edge of the worst of the muck. Many thanks to PedalPushin, 5-Bears-In-Alaska, and Tundra Tim for turning what could have been a bummer of a situation into one that will always be easy to look back on and laugh about.
