If you'd like to peer through a kind of 'window' into one of the many ways today's military uses GPS technology, here's a link to a conference in Scottsdale AZ. The conference home page has links to all kinds of nifty pieces of hardware... mostly related to combat search & rescue, but definitely of interest to folks who're hardware 'geeks'. 2008 HOOK2 GPS CSAR System Users’ Conference and Training: www.gdc4s.com/content/detail.cfm?acronym=HOOK2%20CSAR&page=6

Yes FLYRFN they will be installed in the survival vests on your airplane by the end of the year. This is the new survival radio system and uses off the shelf Garmin GPS technology to provide a location and then can send that and messages out in a frequency agile burst that can not be tracked by the enemy. The military has used them in the war zone for years and we are now starting to see them state side. Part of my job will be programing them and installing them and I teach them. but if you can use a garmin, you can use the GPS in this radio.
