So today I actually pulled out my GPS at a site visit and was able to impress the Federal person I was meeting with by identifying coordinates of a location. Later we were able to identify a storm drain that fed into the location and I was able to assure them it was the correct drain and tell them the distance away from our first point. ;D
Small stuff but heh, they were very impressed. so was I.

One of the satellites was not working today, it was the wrong drain ;D
It is fun when you can use the GPS for other things. My wife was sure she knew where the hotel was in Orlando when we arrived from here. After a while it was obvious that we were lost. I had looked on Google maps, found the hotel before we left and loaded the coords into my GPS. I fired up the GPS and went up and down side streets like I owned them and she was freaking, "We are so lost!" she said. I told her to relax I have it. Soon we crossed the interstate in front of the hotel and she said, "I see it!" Whew!

I now work in the Machine Control department which incorporates GPS technology onto enormous construction machines - excavators, motor graders, pavers, etc... Once you have a programmer map out a job site with the coordinates and elevation, GPS technology does the rest of the work controlling the enormous monster sized machinery within a centimeter accuracy on the grading. That's just, like, crazy man. And cool. Oh so very cool.

The first time I read your post, I read "Mind Control."
It is cool to see the technology used like this. I knew we had arrived at work when I saw a survey crew of one person head out with a Trimble unit to do a job that used to take a crew of three.

The first time I read your post, I read "Mind Control." We do that, too. However, I cannot reveal our methods. Let's just say that right now you are feeling an unaccountable urge to purchase me beer and pizza. Let me know when you're ready for a delivery address.

He always has beer on his mind.

Wait a minute... So you are saying that GPS units are good for something other than caching? I don't believe it.
