I recently purchased a Garmin Rino 120. Got a location of my house with it and tried to locate it via the google earth. Nothing comes close to my location. Does the GPS Exchange file make some type of adjustments or changes to the coordinates? I thing I've set the GPS up correctly but maybe not Please help
Thanks Bob

Hey Bob! I have the same GPS and I like it a lot. I try not to get to fond of them as I tend to break them or lose them to the bottom of lakes. You don't have to look hard to find a picture of my last one on this forum. About your question: Without watching you marking and entering the coordinates, I am going to make a guess that there is a format error. so lets say you live at the Kincaid Chalet - To enter the coordinates into Google they need to be in this format 61.15397 -150.05517 not N61 09.238 W150 03.310 To make this change is easy. We'll change the setup format. Don't worry, this will not move where you marked your house or any caches, just convert the coordinates to decimal degrees. Find your "Main Menu" scroll down and select the "setup" the hammer icon select the "Units" icon (looks like a golf club) Now select the top "position format" and select the very top "hddd.ddddd" option Be sure the map datum is WGS 84 Now go back to your home waypoint "find n go"and enter those coords into google. See if that works better. Don't forget to change it back before you go caching Oh ya - goto one of the geocaching events, there will be lots of people there to help you!

Hi, ok can someone please explain how I get google earth - is it an option at geocaching.com? does it go on the gps unit? This sounds cool, but my synapses are not letting me understand it. thanks

To use Google Earth go to: earth.google.com/You can get downloads to your GPS from google for a fee and what they are, I have no idea. From $20 to $400 There are great maps to have on your GPS like Mapsource or Topo maps and others. You can use "google maps" on geocaching.com and has a lot of the same images. I hope that helps - Ole

Thanks Ole. I have mapsource, took me a call to garmin to get it working but it is really cool. I appreciate all the visuals, so will give the google a try. I have a car garmin that I won at a trade show last year. it is really cool because it talks to me and directs me to locations. that could be rather annoying while caching however, so glad my etrex does not have that option. lories

Teaching GPS over the years I have been exposed to a lot of different types. And they all have the same basic functions, and then some bells and and other things added in. On garmins main page they have a basic GPS pdf file. It might not be for your type of GPS but as I said the basics are all the same. In the military we had to set standards so that all the GPS were in the same format as people have found that if they are different then they can really goof things up. On a land nav course a few years ago, we had converted the GPS over to NAD 27 as we were using maps and needed the GPS in the same format, a person had to change batteries and the GPS auto switched to it'd default setting of WGS 84 and we found that there was over 200 pace distance between the GPS's saying that they were at the same spot. Long story short, if things do not look right, know and check your settings. they should be the same if you are caching with someone so you do not get really mad at someone when you know yours was programed right.
