I have to vent somewhere and this seemed like a good place. When I checked my small cache today I discovered that someone had stolen my super powerful magnet and replaced it with 2 little wimpy ones that barely do the job. Why are people such shmucks? I have an almost endless supply of the super duper ones. I would have gladly shared had the thief posted a reply letting me know how much they really needed such a magnet. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. I guess not everyone has the same ethics/morals.

That is pretty crappy!!! Same cachers probably don't mind stealing geocoins from caches. I hope I never catch one! That was a neat magnet BTW! I wish I had an unlimited supply.

I use to purchase 2 GOcoins when I ordered, then let one loose in a cache. I do not leave coins any longer. I have 17 that are missing and never logged as being found. However cache owners and other cachers have informed me the coins are not there. I usually just list them as missing since there is no "stolen" category to select. And, I usually write it as such in a note for that cache.

hi just came to this site at invitation. I am coming to ANC Sunday and bringing a bunch of TBs. They are from my daughter's class project and first time I have gotten TBs. I hope they don't get muggled. I don't want a bunch of third graders to tell me how lame it is before we even get started. Anyway, very excited to be in ANC.

I remember that magnet. I almost made the misstake of setting the cache one the hood of my truck when signing the log, It would have been fun getting it unstuck again. That magnet is very powerfull. I thought at the time that it would be funny to see a cache using a ammo can with that size magnet on it. It would probibly hold one. I have only made a couple caches with magnets and only put one out so far but I always glue the magnet on it so it can't be taken. 'J-B Weld' works great on super magnets.

;D Welcome to Anchorage and I hope you are right and they don't find out there's a lot of bad people that do steal TB's out there and many more things lately. Good luck in your journey and hope you have a pleasant time in Anchorage!!

Hey, despite our ramblings here, the vast majority of Anc cachers are great folks. It just takes 1 to spoil things. All established Anchorage caches are safe for TB drops. I doubt you'll have a muggle problem.

One way to help reduce the disappearance of geocoins and TBs may be to make the caches Premium Member only caches. Then you can see in the log who viewed your cache and possibly identify problem makers.

The magnets are used to hold a small micro cache to metal like a light poll or just about anything. There are some that are real strong and they work great. I have no idea why someone would have taken those. AKDogmom has had some fun with their hides and I was one who caused them some pain but not the magnets!

Then you can see in the log who viewed your cache and possibly identify problem makers. That does not help much because the premium member usually does not place the coin/TB into a members only cache when it gets moved. It usually just goes into the next available cache. I remedied the whole problem. I don't drop coins or TBs anymore, and all I do is "discover" the ones I see.

While caching in OKC I've notice people are placing a scanned copy of their coin in caches and having it traveled that way. ( I came across three of them). I really dont like the idea.... but is this is what it's coming to?

Nooo...you let the cat out of the bag in Alaska! Here are some geocaching.com threads on the topic, so folks can decide how they feel about the practice: I will NOT log a coin if it's not the real coin. True, I've had coins go missing, but I've also had travel bugs and entire caches go missing. The game will become a virtual game if people quit putting things out because things kept disappearing.

I remedied the whole problem. I don't drop coins or TBs anymore, and all I do is "discover" the ones I see. I do sympathize with your loss of SO many geocoins and understand why you don't drop any more. I'm perhaps in a state of denial over all the coins I've dropped because I haven't checked up on mine recently. However, how does only using the "discovered it" log for coins and TBs you find remedy anything? The coins or TBs miss out on an opportunity to travel to another cache, which is why they were released in the first place, and, they are still sitting in a cache waiting to be taken rather than safely ensconced in your cache bag while in between caches. If everyone used only the "discovered it" log, none of the travelers would ever move. One thing I do to increase TB and geocoin longevity is I put a mission tag (small laminated instruction sheet) on each. I add additional language to the coins, pointing out that they are to be logged like a TB. I started doing that after a cacher wrote me asking what to do with a coin of mine they found. Then, another cacher asked me at an event when is it okay to keep a geocoin, to which I replied, "Never" unless the coin is unactivated and specifically identified as a cache prize. At that point, I realized that many coin disappearances are probably due to cachers not knowing what to do with them more than conscious theft. There is a pinned topic in the geocaching.com forums that has some additional longevity tips: Snoogans' Tb Longevity Clinic

This is a cacher's nightmare! Found while caching AZ. A sealed cache container is inside and it’s not the actions of a muggle. Can you imagine if you found your container looking like that?

Thank goodness that it was a demonstration and not a current event. I am glad you mentioned that there was a sealed container inside because a destroyed cache is a sad thing.
Takes me back to the cache that Commanda, the Captain, Magicalmike and I fixed...

Jay and Jens Easter Egg Cache was muggled the 3rd day out. A Beautiful Cache. They have decided to Archive all their hidden caches(3). They are waiting for spring to come to Archive Summitt cache. This all due to nasty muggles. I am out for Muggle revenge, I kinda take it personnel when someone comes into my house, hence the valley, and ruins our game. Stay tuned.........

I never got a chance to get that cache but I did lose a coin that was in there. I am not sure of the location but would love to come up with a muggle proof cache. Most of those end up to be micros.
I am not sure if there is a way to get back at the muggles that will not backfire. I am sure if you were to hide the cache in an English or Math text book they would be safe from the muggles that would steal it.
I know of one cache that I am sure I am the reason it was muggled, the Oberg cache in Peters Creek. I went after it three times but there was muggles near the cache so I left. On the fourth try, the muggles were 100 yards away and seemed to be busy. As I signed the log I noticed that they were looking over at me now and then. I replaced the cache as fast as I could but it didn't go unnoticed. The cache was never replaced. I think as a cache owner you have to realize that a cacher will get "Busted" now and then. If it's by the wrong kind of muggle, it's gone. So make another to replace the cache should it go missing. I don't have one for every cache I have but I do have 20+ containers from ammo cans to nanos ready to go. Odds are pretty good that a cache will go missing. I have had three that could not be found and I replaced two of them only to have two of the containers show up later.
Scobey's cache was that way. It was missing so I replace it, a day or two later someone DNFed again so I ran back over with my 3rd container only to find two containers still on the hide.

Gosh, I think it's unfortunate someone get so frustrated they would pull all their caches. I take it as a challenge to keep my caches alive after they get muggled. I've got one (Berthed Along the Bike Path) that's gone missing three times. I'll keep changing locations and shrinking the container size until I get a cache to stick at the location because it's on a little known part of the Fairabanks bike path system next to the Chena River with a great view of the Tanana Chief riverboat and, when the water is open, river otters, muskrats and beavers. A completely different example is a cache I hid at the Fairbanks Visitor Center log cabin. I felt certain I'd be replacing that cache routinely because in the summer the location has dozens or hundreds of people per hour going by it. I haven't had to replace it once and it's now Fairbanks' second most visited cache. Cache muggling happens and it adds to the challenge of the game. I take the perspective that if one of my caches is found by a nonplayer of the game, I didn't hide it well enough or a finder had the bad luck of being muggled and I need to increase my effort to keep it from being found again.
