Hello All, Not really sure if this is the proper place for this (Admin, feel free to move it if necessary) but I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself and ask a question. First the intro...the name is ak_traveler and I got interested in geocaching through my RV friends. So after reading about it some I thought I'd give it a try! Just picked up my GPS and now I am wondering about software programs to keep my waypoints and caches organized. I heard about GSAK and MyCache and downloaded the two programs (trial versions) but I am wondering about them. Are they really necessary and does anyone here use them? They seem a bit overwhelming! I am still way to new at all this and I have terms and a whole new language swimming around in my head! Are there any meets or gatherings planned in the near future? Sure could use an experienced cacher to bounce questions off of - the store that I bought my GPS from didn't have a clue about geocaching!

GSAK is used by many cachers and is GREAT! You can load 500 caches of your choice using pocket queries from geocaching.com in about 4 seconds, it does look intimidating but it's not that bad once you get use to it. It also depends what type of GPS you have, if you have a low cost gps you may have to load the coords manually, in this case GSAK is not needed.

Thanks flyrfn, my GPS is a Garmin eTrex Vista HCX and I am slowly learning to work it. I haven't been on any hunts yet, but I hope to go out soon.

Welcome to the hunt! Your GPS is an upgrade of the unit I use (I don't have the datacard version) & can load via USB cable from the GSAK program on the computer.
Watch this forum for announcement of an upcoming 'training' event at Kincaid Park (thru the auspices of MOA Parks), to be held this spring. The other (& best) way to learn the ropes quickly is to post willingness to tag along on evening or weekend cache hunts on these threads. These folks will take good care of you!

I'd LOVE to go out with a more experienced partner a few times till I get the hang of this if I can time it right! I know there are a bunch of caches in Fairbanks and I'd like to go see if I can scare one up! Don't know if I'll make the Kincaid Park meet (that is in Anchorage correct?) but I am going to try to get to one of them.
