Well, at risk of giving away a puzzle cache I haven't even seen yet... a mashie niblick's what an iron with a loft of around 40ยบ used to be called. Somewhat equivalent to a 7-8-9 iron, depending on how old they are; it's the old-timer (i.e. nineteenth century or before) phrase used to describe a 'short-range lofting iron'. Had to learn a lot of golf trivia back in college, as the two folks I worked for at the newspaper conducted summer staff meetings every Tuesday and Thursday at various local golf courses, beginning at 0730. Yup - I used to be able to play a par game on the flat county course. However... that was about thirty years ago... I used to weigh less then too! Geez, oleruns... you need a hobbie or something. Have you heard of benchmarking? That'll get you outside more often...

I thought everyone had a mashie niblick in the "way back there" part of their garage. Then again, I am retired and using up all of your SSAN fund deductions.
