I knew the Elmore Road extention was coming...it was already being heavily debated before I moved to Fairbanks in 1998. However, the 48th street extension caught me completely by surprise this winter. This road will connect Elmore with Boniface and cut across the existing Tour of Anchorage Trail, the ASDRA mushing trails, and several other trails that people have become accustomed to using. At least one, perhaps more of Oleruns' caches stand to be impacted if they haven't already by the recent hydroaxe activity in the area. For photos of the forest clearing, go to the Kids Need Parks website.Note that the park itself is not being developed. However, how land immediately adjacent to the park is developed has direct impacts on use and access to the park. As major users of wild places in urban settings, geocachers are stakeholders in land development . The public hearing process included the mushers, mountain bikers, Nordic skiers, and other trail users. Why not geocachers? You can become informed about additional upcoming impacts to Far North Bicentennial Park by clicking here.

Nice that they marked the potholes already for another street we wont maintain. ;D We should bid on the 1% for art and use that to buy coins! To heck with the benchmark at the airport. We could build it out of ammocans! AND Altoid tins.... A statue of Dr Bleh.... on a horse, no a moose with his hand out like this: Bonus points if anyone knows where this picture was taken!

As for the OP theme here - looks like a mini-Tudor Road is being born. The Providence / UAA "U-MED" district northwest of this nice aerial photo is going to put lots of pressure on Tudor Road's heavy traffic load as well.

I for one can't wait till this new road is done. Along with the Dowling extension. And hopefully at one point the Elmore extension thru APU. I know we will lose alot of park land but it is for the better. We need more direct routes thru this city instead of going thru heavily populated areas. My 2 cents.

Rats...gc.com only lets one page through the most recent 1000 photos which this morning only takes be back to yesterday. Pretty amazing how many photos the website can digest since I imagine Monday wouldn't have been a heavy usage day. Will have to figure out another way...

My friend has no idea what geocaching is, she is a runner who moved there. She Teaches English and was paid in American dollars but that turned out to be a bad deal in the long run due to the dollars drop.

Personally I love it when we build or upgrade roads here! I mean, parks are really really great, but there's a special place in my heart for roads...* Yup - roadbuilding not only means more convenient travel through and around town - it means lots and lots of orange cones / orange delineators (those tube things with black bases) / orange barrels / orange construction signs... Yup - to me, orange is the color of money! Mmmm... my palms are getting sweaty just thinking about all that new construction!!! And then, when the roads are almost finished, there's a need for new green directional signs and new yellow warning signs and new white regulatory signs... (I need a bib I'm drooling so much right now!) Wow... thanks for the adrenaline rush! And now it's time to sell the state some more STOP signs - thanks to all those folks who don't slow down in time to stop at intersections, and decide to use the STOP sign as a last-ditch way of stopping. Yup - $68.75 each for the sign, and another $54.40 for a new post... gotta love wintertime! *(OK - I admit it, there's a special place in my wallet for new roads!) OK - is the statue in SWEDEN?

My websearch efforts have failed to turn up an Alaskan teacher in Europe, but it's possible this photo was taken in front of the royal palance in Oslo, Norway. Problem for me is that after twenty years, many of the royal palaces I visited in Scandinavia, Austria, etc., have blended together.

I agree that Anchorage needs more (albeit, after the fact) intelligent commuter road design. I spent the past nine years living in Fairbanks which has several cross city commuter roads (Mitchell Expressway, Johansen Expressway, Steese Highway, Parks Highway, Farmers Loop, Goldstream Valley) for quick north/south and east/west travel. The purpose of my post wasn't "anti-development." The city has actually worked with many of the user groups to reroute the mushing and skiing trails and to provide separated grade crossings (bridges and culverts). If geocachers keep their ears to the ground on future developments, we, too, can have our voices heard in the community meetings.

(If you look carefully along the Elmore Road project you might find one of the thirty or so that went 'missing' on that project...)

Ole I believe the answer to your photo caption question would be:
Moscow government is making sure Muscovites and visitors alike won’t forget this year’s winter celebrations.
The monument to the city’s founder Yury Dolgoruky has been brightened up with a traditional prince's coat similar to the Father Frost outfit.
It took the organisers almost three weeks to design and make the 8-metre long coat, not taking into account the numerous fittings and remodelling.
They say it won’t keep the copper statue from getting cold, but it will surely make passers-by smile during the holiday season. hope that is right, it took long enought to research it!
