has anyone did the caching serious around the college between palmer and wasilla, on the lake trail systems? where is the best place to park and gain access and how long are the trails? thanks Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area: N61° 33.200 W149° 13.600, accessed off the Glenn Highway just east of the Parks Highway Interchange, $5 Alaska State Parks fee OR free with annual State Parks Pass. UAF Experimental Farm: N61° 34.100 W149° 15.200, accessed off Trunk Road from Parks Hwy. Mat-Su College: N61° 34.800 W149° 14.350, accessed off Trunk Road from Parks Hwy. Crevasse-Moraine Trail System: N61° 35.425 W149° 44.450, I can't remember for certain, but I think there is a nominal Mat-Su Borough daily parking fee of $2-$5. Access from Palmer-Wasilla Highway east of Trunk Road. I'm sure there are other access points listed as additional waypoints on some of the cache pages, but the above are the four trailheads I have used on various occasions. There are more trails than you can cover in a day. Skifast and I once did thirteen miles and fifty-some caches in about five hours and didn't touch half of the caches in the area because all the trails connect with each other throughout the area. You will definitely want to load the free Northwest Trails on your GPS and Garmin mapping software, so you can plan your targets/routes ahead of time to avoid out and back treks (make loops). If you have two vehicles at your disposal, you can plan a traverse from one parking area to another. Take a UV light to do some of the multis. Take lots of bug dope, but maybe the bugs won't be very bad due to how dry it has been. Check the smoke situation. The air is pretty bad on the Anchorage Hillside today.

The MatSu Greenbelt group has some pretty extensive maps: www.matanuska-greenbelt.org/trail-mapsWe usually park at Long Lake, the MatSu College or the UAF Farm. At MatSu College, take a right on Musgrove Drive. This will take you around the back side of the building. Go until the roads ends in the last parking lot on the other side of the green house. At the trail head there is a large trailhead map to get you going.
