How many cachers ride snowmachines too? Post a picture of your ride here, and whether you're interested in a snowmachine ride / event sometime in late March.I know there's several folks out there who've done some long-distance riding across the Susitna. I'm curious to see who else is equipped, with an eye towards an event in the back country somewhere that's fairly flat and easy to access (such as the Spencer Glacier area just south of Portage Valley). I've found a Ladybug Kids cache up Petersville way while snowmachining, as well as one of Frostg1ant's 'Body by Geocache' series at the head of Eklutna Valley. I've also placed a cache down on the Johnson Trail in the wintertime (which has yet to be found). UV4686 SUNSHINE, east of Talkeetna, looking NNW towards Denali. I was happy to find this benchmark disk up on the Talkeetna Mountains. UW6278 LITTLE over west of Talkeetna, with Denali on the horizon. This is my older sled, and a BLM section mark located a mile north of LITTLE. Sleds at the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop area - a novel way to access a series of caches which are probably buried for the winter (unless a group of folks on snowmachines have good shovels & GPSrs!)

Ah yes! This is the thing of which dreams are made! I WILL resist purchasing any toys that will have limited use for me on the farm!

I still have that little item on my "to do" list that involves placing a series of snowmachine caches up in the Caribou Hills.
I also still have that Johnson Pass cache on my watchlist. Just stopped by the trailhead on my way home Tuesday to check the trailhead condition. While snow level is far below norm, there appears to be plenty of snow for a trail ride. That trail always raises concern over avalanche danger, so the low snow load might actually be a good thing right now.
I'm planning on a Spencer glacier trip, but the snow conditions right now are very poor in that area. March is usually the best time to think about going that way.
All that said, I currently have snowmachines "up on blocks" doing maintenance and repairs. The lack of snow hasn't been pushing me to get things back together and running. But now that it's snowing again...

I know just what you mean about avalanche danger back in that Johnson Pass country. I assume you were looking at the north-end trailhead. Unfortunately, the trail's blocked in several spots by large blowdown; that means chainsaws on trailer sled behind at least one traveler if you're coming in from the north. I've never been out the south end of Johnson Pass, but I understand a lot of folks ride in from that direction (less sidehill stuff that end).
I have two 'old' sleds in maintenance mode - a cute little Skidoo Elan that I want to tweak with a hand-pump in the fuel line (hate the push button primer...) and a battered but serviceable Polaris Startrak (little single-cylinder geared to pull a trailer sled; easy to ride, light) which needs new ski bushings (they flop around a bit right now). The 'upgrade' sled's a 2004 Polaris RMK 800 (way more power than this old man's used to riding - but very nice improvement over the 1996 Polaris RMK 600...)
