I was just wondering if someone could give me a rundown on mystery caches. I looked at the definition on gc.com and it seemed very open to interpretation- perhaps that's the point...
I'm asking because Cub and I went looking for one today and my GPS was sending me into a park strip in back of some peoples' houses- most specifically, toward one of their porches. I deeply suspected something was wrong with this scenario. LOL- so we just kept walking.
Anyone got pointers or parameters on this for us?
Thanks!!!

I was just wondering if someone could give me a rundown on mystery caches. Mystery caches usually require homework to solve for the actual cache coordinates before you embark on a cache hunt. You'll need to look at each cache page to see what the actual puzzle is and sometimes the real challenge is to determine what needs to be solved. Some puzzles are fairly straightforward like Sudoku or internet research on a particular subject, others require a PhD in cryptography or reading comprehension, and some simply require having the same warped mind as the hider. There are still some caches marked with the blue question mark that have an additional logging requirement (ALR) such as post how long it took you to hike to the top of Peak 2 or wear Janet's (Rocky Horror Picture Show) wig found in the cache container and take a photo, or strike a phoon pose and take a photo. Groundspeak recently stopped allowing ALRs for caches (except for Virtual and Earth Caches which have no logbook to sign) and the cache owners have been asked to change the cache type to regular or multi-. A number of local night caches (follow reflectors through the trees) also feature the blue question mark as a flag that something special is required to complete the cache.
