www.adn.com/news/alaska/wildlife/story/777230.htmlBear cop or no bear cop, this area looks like it'll be off limits again. My boss had a black bear sighting last night right at the parking lot for campbell tract, a yearling cub walked right under the science center gate. It wasn't aggressive but it was also not scared of the human presence. Parks officials say they will shut the trail in early summer before salmon begin entering nearby streams. A closing date has not been set. Ole, do you still have the "take back your trails" poster from last year? I'm going to need some copies.

That trail sounds like a great place to forward-locate a patrol office for the city's new bear cop, eh?

Maybe your boss can walk around the area to see if he can find more?

I need to outfit him with the new bacon scented day pack and honey flavored hiking boots before his next trip into the woods!

I need to outfit him with the new bacon scented day pack and honey flavored hiking boots before his next trip into the woods! Don't forget to spray the rest of him down with pepper spray, I hear the bears like it! Or if that is too expensive I hear that vanillia extract works pretty good, or maple syrup. Give him a bag of butter popcorn to snack on too! ;D Really though it is too bad the trail has to be shut down. Olerun on ADN had some nice dialog in there too for the link to the article! I think it might be a cacher we all know too! I like the point he made about the homeless camps are not having a bear problem, why... The fact they clear out all the black spruce so you can see into the woods for a possible homeless encounter on the Chester Creek trails might indeed make a good way to deal a little better with the blind spots on the trails out there on Rovers Run too!

This hit my inbox earlier today: "...the Mayor and the Director of Parks and Recreation will officially close Mellen's Way / Rover’s Run tomorrow 5/29 due to the returning salmon run and the associated high bear risk. Trail barricades will be placed tomorrow at the east end of Rovers at the Gas Line, the Moose Meadow Connector at Black Bear Trail intersection and the west end of Rovers at the Viewpoint intersection. The closure will be for the summer months with the reopening in October."
The trail closure will affect the most commonly used access routes to "Wooly Mammoth," "Camo Coffee," "TFTC Alaska" and "Twice is Nice." Access to other caches may also be affected, but my memory isn't what it used to be.
