No - it's not a strange tale under the midnight sun - but scobey and NorthWes went solstice benchmarking on the 21st of June to find TT0739 CHET and TT0743 DON... and we were successful! Neither mark is obvious to the casual seeker (and wasn't very obvious to us at first either!).
Thought I'd share several cautionary notes with you regarding these finds. DON is part of a 3-mark cluster at the intersection of Lake Otis and 16th Avenue. Two marks are on curbs, but DON itself is under a big rock settled in to ground level with the park area. If you recover this mark, ensure you get the rock back in place at ground level to facilitate lawn mowing (it's heavy - all the two of us could do to level it!). As for CHET - well, there's a lot of broken glass right on the station. We 'recovered' the mark, then recovered it with gravel. Didn't CITO out the broken glass, so if you look for it bring a small garden trowel and leather gloves, and don't kneel without a pad to protect yourself.
DON is interesting as it dates from the early 1960s when Anchorage was recovering from the impact of the '64 earthquake - it was used to lock in elevations all across the eastern side of town. CHET dates from 1965 and was instrumental in establishing the geodetic control network which was used to expand the Seward Hwy (Gambell / Ingra) and the build the Sullivan Arena.
