Planning has been underway for awhile now, but it is time to settle on a date. Our choices include:
Sunday July 7 Saturday July 13 Sunday July 14 Sunday August 4 Saturday August 10
Also, we have a choice between Soldotna Creek Park and the Kenai Municipal Park.
Input, anyone?

The July dates may be better than the August to reduce the chance of rain and there is more daylight for those early morning/late night cachers. I personally like the greater variety of terrain available in Kenai Municipal Park for the temporary caches and other games. For those who can spend a night in the area, Saturday versus Sunday probably does not make a difference. For those who make a day trip for the event, Saturday would be better to allow recovery on Sunday from a return home in the wee hours of the morning.

Yes, I liked the Kenai park as well. The rental price is about half of what Soldotna charges, so that is a bonus IMHO. There is a background difference between the two that I have to consider and that is that Kenai Parks & Rec is rather indifferent about geocaching, but Soldotna Parks & Rec is extremely supportive and has taken initiative to contact me on several things. We have already planned another basic geocaching class for the Spring to be hosted by Soldotna.
I'm really leaning toward the July 13th date myself. The reason I switched it to Sunday last year was by request of some Anchorage based folks who work on Saturdays. There is plenty of time, so we'll let the dates simmer for awhile and see what input I get.
As for the caching game, I had a really cool idea creep into my noggin about a week ago. I've been formulating the thoughts and believe I may have come up with a really nifty new method to run the day caches this year. It's going to bring in many more twists and turns plus drastically increase the teamwork requirement. It should be a blast!

There is plenty of time, so we'll let the dates simmer for awhile and see what input I get. The Membership Survey taken in November 2012 indicated the following day of the week preferences: Saturday: 75.7% Sunday: 59.5% Friday: 32.4% Wednesday: 29.7% Monday & Thursday: 21.6% Tuesday: 18.9% Answers add up to more than 100% because cachers could choose more than one day of the week.

This is an event I really don't want to miss. I would prefer a Sunday but that's because it's my Saturday. But either way, I'll be trying to get time off from work for this one. I really liked the Kenia park and it's over look. I'd like to see it there again, plus I have caches there I need to find still

After much consideration, I have selected Saturday, July 13 as my first choice in picnic dates. Next step is contacting the Kenai Parks Mgr to confirm availability and then book the park for the day. Once that is confirmed, I'll post the cache listing and we can start taking orders for burgers!!!
Yes, 7 13 ... one of those numbers that has a lot of thematic potential. I think JK Rowling would agree! We'll see what we can do with it.

Engineers... "prime numbers" Is the glass half empty or half full? Engineer... "it's mid-span" At any rate, you have plenty of time to solve some puzzles, but you better get started. If you start now, you might have these ones ready to roll by the 6th Annual Picnic... Bushwackers' Sekret KashDoolittle's RevengeSacagawea's Aspen Leaf Trail CacheAh, those were good times. Still waiting for KK to resurface and publish some new puzzles!

My youngest daughter helped me work through the Harry Potter puzzles, so we have eight ready to find.

Will do!!! Last year I didn't delegate as much as I needed to and found a number of things far too rushed in the 11th hour (though most people probably didn't even notice). So, my goal this year is for better and earlier planning. And that planning is well underway already.

So simple, my 11-year-old solved the puzzles with a little nudge here and there on how a puzzle might work. I couldn't have solved them without her tremendous depth of knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Now, to shut down the computer and actually read one of the books myself.

Careful! These books are actually very well written and they will absolutely suck you into the story. You'll start with the first chapter of the first book, but you won't be able to stop until the last word of Book 7's epiloge (at which point you'll be yearning for the next adventure). So, set aside a little vacation time before you start!

If the Board would grant me a one-month sabbatical, I could get through the series in three to four weeks based on how quickly my youngest daughter plowed through them.
My kids keep asking me why I don't read more...

I hear ya. It's been at least a year since the seed was planted for doing a puzzle series on The Lord of the Rings series. It's been a loooonnng time since I read those, and we can't just go by the movies (have to be tricksy with the books in building the puzzles), so I set about to reread them all starting with The Hobbit. It took me forever to get through The Hobbit doing a little here and there. When the movie was rolling out in theaters, I forced myself to put in some crunch time and finish it up before going to see the new movie (so I could be hypercritical... but the movie was still awesome). Now, I'm about 1/3 of the way through book 1 and not making much progress due to my work load. It sure would be nice to take some quiet time and hit these so I could start working out a puzzle series for them this summer.

That is a great day...a Saturday and earlier in July than 2012 which means less traffic!!!!!

LOL! Good luck with that. It is "Opening Weekend" for the dipnetting season. I expect there will be plenty of traffic, though it will depend on fish run numbers at that point.

Oh crud...thought it was the weekend before!!! Never have done the dip netting method of filling the freezer. Might have to sneak over to Seward the day after for some Silver action!!

Need a deckhand for that Seward trip? I'm still working out details for my summer, but it's looking promising that I'll be able to attend/help out. I'll keep you posted!

LOL... as you've noted before, the new forum package requires all calendar entries to have a related post somewhere on the forum. And since I'm still working up the listing details, it's not yet viewable (though I'm sure your alter-ego could take a peek if he wanted to, though there's nuttin' to see just yet). Since I have confirmation of date and place from Kenai Parks & Rec, I'll have that listing finished up and published very soon!

And now I'm going to correct myself since the Event Guideline appears to be have been updated since I last looked at it: "Events may be published up to six months prior if an overnight stay is expected or if the event is designed to attract a regional or international group of cachers."I'll watch for it. In the meantime, there is a Fairbanks Event I need to publish for September.
