We must be doing something right... MOA Parks & Rec has asked us to once again organize an Intro to Geocaching class for the Fall community course offerings, under the auspices of Geocache Alaska.
This time around, in an effort to be more inclusive of those who'd love the opportunity to help others learn about geocaching I'm posting this event here as a thread. We're still in the early planning stages; only the dates of either Sept 22nd or Sept 29th have been mentioned, with a follow-on class in the evening of the next Thursday for more field practice. As in the past, the most important part of the class is having enough 'field assistants' to make the outdoors portion of the class successful. Feedback from prior students shows this 'hands-on' portion is the where the most learning takes place!
If you'd like to help chime in here please. In turn, I'll provide more info as it becomes available. Other comments constructive to the process are welcome as well...

Sept 29 is the afternoon of our Indian Summer Event. That may or may not be a good day for Intro to Geocaching.

Sept 22 would be a good day for it, as it may get more new cachers involved since the Indian Summer Event is the following weekend. Not only will they be introduced to the sport but also the community.
I would be interested in helping out.

DOH! It had better happen on the 22nd, eh? I'll contact the Parks folks - see why discussion can be a good thing? Thanks to all who've responded with ideas or 'will helps'!

UPDATE: To meet a mix of scheduling needs, this event will occur on Saturday September 15th, with the follow-on Thursday night class on Saturday September 20th. I'll ask Scobey to alter our web calendar.
Although there's a $10 fee for class participants, that fee is waived for the experienced cachers attending as 'field assistants' (small group leaders for the second half of Saturday, and on Thursday evening). Here's your chance to be involved with establishing good game behaviors in new cachers! Post your 'field assistant' attendance intentions on the event page when it's stood up and I'll make sure you're on the 'no fee' list. Thanks!
Here's how the event will be listed in the Muni's Fall Activity Guide:
Geocaching Clinic $10
Sa Sep 15 10a-1:30p
Th Sep 20 6:30p
Kincaid Park Outdoor Center
Geocaching is an addictive outdoor hide-and-seek adventure game played with GPS (global positioning system) units. Enthusiasts from Geocache Alaska will be instructing a 2-part clinic on Geocaching consisting of an indoor training session followed by outdoor field discovery sessions. Participants provide their own GPS unit. For ages 12 yrs +. Min 6/Max 24

I should be able to help out both days...just let me know and I'll add it to my calender. I'll be counting on having you there! It's most useful to have our lady cachers at these intro training events, as a major percentage of the trainees who sign up are women or families w/women. Good for them to see other ladies caching & having a great time with it...

With enough reminders, I could probably be a field assistant in the Saturday class. I'm not sure if you want someone with my "found" count (which is still low), but if anyone was having issues with their receivers I could come in handy. Let me know.

Toni get better soon! I have been to the store to get some information and I am sure they think that us geocachers are a pain. They said you're sick but were able to contact Garmin and find the answer for me. Time to spend more money after work -

They said you're sick but were able to contact Garmin and find the answer for me. Time to spend more money after work - Thanks, Ole. I came back from Virginia with a cold that's just been kicking my buttocks. I'm no longer in recreational GPS either, but if you ask Josh (my replacement) he'll call me and I'll come down from my lofty position of survey and machine control GPS. Oh... and feel free to ask me any questions here. Just shoot me a PM.
