Some weird things happen with those automotive type GPS devices. While returning to WA this past week, between Whitehorse and Dawson Creek, my Garmin Nuvi 660 kept stating "A better route is available", and at times it told me to "Please drive to highlighted route", which indicated the road I was already on. I thought there was only one AK/CAN highway.

Aye it is sad reminder that though technology is great, you shouldn't always rely on it. Personally if I was heading into Death Valley, I would of read a map and possibly brought one too. As I am paranoid about being stuck out in 100+ degree weather.

A very sad story indeed something that a good "Trip Plan" could have most likely prevented. No need to just trust the GPS and not even look at a map. Mine shows I drive in the water everytime I go south down Turnagain Arm. At least all of them aren't dead,. Seems I've read a couple of similiar stories of sorts a number of years ago on the Denali Hwy here in the winter.
