Please post a message in this thread if you'd like to nominate a person to serve on the 2013 Board of Directors, or if you'd like to put your own name in to be considered. Nominees will be contacted by the Elections Committee (chair - FlightRisk AK) and the names of those who indicate a willingness to serve will be reviewed by the 2012 Board. Nominees will be given an opportunity to present a statement of interest and purpose (on a thread in this same section of the forum) so members may understand why the individuals want to serve. A copy of the GeocacheAlaska! Bylaws can be downloaded here, for the purpose of reading the board member job descriptions: www.geocachealaska.org/documents/geocachealaskabylaws.pdf

Suggestion: If possible, could you create a link to the nominations thread on the homepage or mention that it is listed under the membership committee heading. I had a difficult time finding it.

I am willing to continue on as VP if everyone sees fit. The rumor that I might be leaving Alaska next year seems to have been unfounded at this time. As far as I know I will still be here!

Being Alaskan raised, I love the great outdoors, whether it be skiing, hiking, fishing, camping, and now Geocaching! I was introduced to the sport almost 2 years ago, and after that first found cache, I knew I was hooked. I know I can bring to GeocacheAlaska, my experience in teaching classes, computer experience, as well as my knowledge of being smart outdoors in all weather. I am motivated by the love of the sport of geocaching which gives me the ability and desire I want to share and educate new and old cachers. I have served on the board for Fairbanks Paddlers, where I helped organize river trips, movie nights, and educational events. I have volunteered over the years with organizations such as R.E.A.C.T, Midnight Sun Fly Casters, BCDC, Steese Fire Department, and Santa Claus Clearing house. I am available for questions.

Fuzzybelly's statement of interest:
I'm running for one of the "member at large" positions that is available. I'd be happy to serve if the majority wishes. Remember, if you vote for me:
I am willing to let anyone know where the most populated bear areas in the region are and when to avoid them.
I've got a tried and true method for finding difficult caches(The fuzzybelly technique) and I'm willing to share it with anyone.
I wont be able to help anyone with solving a puzzle cache, but I'll be ready to offer you a wise arse comment when you ask.
I never hesitate to give credit where credit is due when using someone else's hard work, and following their tracks to a cache. Thanks Glennfish and school.
And I'll be happy to kiss a baby if you wish, just please don't bring me an ugly one:)

I am running for the 2012 GeocacheAlaska! Board of Directors for the position of Vice President.
I began geocaching in 2004 and have been involved at various levels in the communities of Fairbanks, Valdez and Anchorage. I was a member of the steering committee that drafted the original by-laws for GeocacheAlaska! and have been on the Board of Directors since 2009 holding postions of Webmaster (2009-2010), Vice-President (2011), and Secretary (2012).
I have brokered Land Manager agreements in Fairbanks and Anchorage to keep geocaching alive on public lands in those communities. I am also the Groundspeak Volunteer Cache Reviewer for Alaska and the EarthCache Reviewer for Alaska, Hawaii, and other areas as required.
I have coordinated eleven geocoin projects on behalf of Alaska geocachers. Those efforts include the first Alaska geocoin in 2005, the first trackable Alaska geocoin in 2006, the first (and to my knowledge, only) solid gold geocoin in 2008, and 2012's jade/gold nugget geocoin. I also set up a Groundspeak Distributorship for GeocacheAlaska!
In 2013, I will work with the Board of Directors to grow the GeocacheAlaska! membership, offer a quality program of educational events, expand the number and types of geofellowship events (Indian Summer, Geofest, etc.), offer unique quality bling to members, and foster relationships with a broader array of Land Managers across Alaska. In addition to developing geocaching friendly land use policies, my goal is to encourage additional Land Manager caching programs such as the USFWS Blue Goose GeoTour, which GeocacheAlaska! helpd launch in October 2012.
Specifically, as Vice President, I will meet my duties as defined in the GeocacheAlaska! by-laws that include scheduling meeting venues, conducting the annual Board of Directors elections, and providing direct support to the GeocacheAlaska! President.
I look forward to continuing to serve Alaskan geocachers.
Regards,
Michael Malvick/Ladybug Kids

Scobey has been geocaching for years. He layed off for awhile for several reasons but is now ready to chip in to make Geocachealaska a great organization, not that it isn't already. I know from experience that 10% of any board does all the work. Been there as a Chamber and Rotary president and as one of the original instigators of this organization. I built the geocachealaska webpage and these forums and then handed them off to people with more energy. I plan to contribute to be one of the 10% if elected.
Thanks

I'm Wes Skinner - caching as NorthWes since 2004. I'm running for President of GeocacheAlaska! Inc. for 2013. I’ve served as President in 2012, as Secretary in 2011 (helping jump-start the GeocacheAlaska newsletters), and as member at large in 2010. I've been involved with GeocacheAlaska since its conceptualization in 2005 as an organization intended to promote geocaching to the public and to represent geocaching interests (such as permission to place caches) to land managers.
As president I will continue to strengthen efforts to meet the purposes of GeocacheAlaska - promoting caching in a positive manner to land managers, to other land user groups, and to the public, while increasing social and educational opportunities for cachers in Alaska. Lessons I’ve learned in the past year as President have shown me how the organization has in a very short time become very successful at meeting its goals. That success is built on establishing directions, calendars, and guidelines that help keep a very talented group of board members all flying in the same direction in a timely fashion. This is the effort I’m striving to excel in for the upcoming year, coupled with making all board members equally effective partners in carrying the workload. By this year-end we’ll have a set of ‘knowledge books’ in place on our website which will provide board members of today and in the future a set of guidelines on how to accomplish any organizational task we’ve done to date. I expect those guidelines to be tweaked in 2013 as we put them into use as a tool to make board members consistently successful at their tasks.
GeocacheAlaska! Inc. must build and maintain land manager relationships. The future of the game here in Alaska mandates that we remain a well-known user group with a positive reputation as good stewards of the lands we play across. We must continually revisit existing relationships to ensure they’re secure, and absolutely have to keep seeking new opportunities to broaden our reach into the land manager community. This organization must also continue its efforts to reach all portions of the state with supports for geocachers. In 2012 we’ve seen members in Cordova, Fairbanks and the Kenai Peninsula make contributions to the organization in terms of membership growth, events, and hosting events of both social and educational purpose. There are many cachers outside the Anchorage area who can make significant things happen when partnered with GeocacheAlaska – it’s time to build on those interests.
The organization’s social fabric – its membership – has grown well past the 100 member mark during 2012, helped along by the Bling Committee’s fabulous ‘Sourdough trackable nametag’ concept (Kudos to Scott Aleckson / SSO JOAT for making that happen). Our education committee (under SSO JOAT’s chairmanship) continued its run of excellence with EDUvents of all kinds in 2012, providing members opportunities for personal growth as geocachers. Finally, the 2012 event series has reinforced my conviction that geocachers like to socialize too – and I intend to see we continue these efforts in 2013.

I, Scott Aleckson, better known in the geocaching community as SSO JOAT, am running for the BOD for re-election as Webmaster. Previously, I served in 2010 on the Education Committee and then on the BOD in 2011 as a Member At Large. I moved to the WebMaster position at the end of 2011 and have served through 2012 as WebMaster. I've also been the sitting Chairman of the Education committee for 2011 and 2012.
Though a resident of Soldotna, I work a 2-week rotation out of town. I've been able to attend every BOD meeting by remote and came up to Anchorage and attended one meeting in person this summer as my schedule aligned with it. Due to great advances in technology and communications, remote service on the BOD has become a proven concept and helps spread the GeocacheAlaska! roots around the state, making it a truly state-wide organization. I'm honored to be a part of that.
On the Education committee, I've pushed forward with the monthly EduVent program on the timetable set back in 2010 that we used throughout 2011 and 2012. The program has been extremely successful in fulfilling Geocache Alaska's goal of delivering geocaching education to the membership as well as the community at large. This year we further expanded our audience and picked up geocachers in Cordova and Fairbanks with some Sourdough Members dropping in individually from all over the state and during their travels around the country. I believe we had attendees at one point or another from Bethel, North Pole, Juneau, and even a dial-in from Denmark. The planning of the 2013 EduVents is already underway.
Since taking the Webmaster position, the updates to these forums and the GeocacheAlaska! website continue. This year, I setup a new email-based submission process for the Calendar Photo Contest and placed all of the submitted images on the website as they came in (they can be viewed in the Photo Gallery). Ongoing maintenance updates continue with regularity to keep the website information as current as possible. In the background, a lot of work is ongoing into a complete redesign of the entire website to make it more functional, user-friendly, and to bring the old FrontPage-based HTML coding standards up to current XHTML and CSS web standards. It is a large job that still has many long hours of work left to do.
Along the way, we had the idea of a trackable Sourdough Member nametag brought to the BOD, and I took on that project. I carried that project from designing the tag, the trackable icons, the customized name labels, to the individual tracking pages for each nametag all the way up to the current maintenance level activity of creating and mailing each new tag as new members sign up. This project has been instrumental in a boost of our Sourdough membership roles by at least 30 members in the 2nd half of 2012, making it a huge success to the organization.
I've also been deeply involved with the "Bling Committee" with assisting the development and production of the 2012 pathtags and our GeocacheAlaska annual geocoin projects.
Several articles were written for the organization's monthly newsletter, which has seen notable improvement this year.
In addition to maintaining the "face" of Geocache Alaska! on the internet, I look forward to continued service to the BOD as a whole as well as the various committees that work behind the scenes to maintain land access and host events for the education and enjoyment of all. I also look forward to providing many contributions to the monthly Newsletter that the organization is putting out.
In your service, Scott

My name is Lisa Echard, caching as FlightRiskAK. I am running for member at large this year. Originally, I served as member at large, then last year as Vice President. I have thoroughly enjoyed contributing to Geocache Alaska and representing our members, both sourdough and cheechako. I look forward to serving another year as member at large, contributing to the various committees and continuing to represent all of our member interests.

I am Roberta (Polgera). I am running for the position of Treasurer for the GeocacheAlaska! board of directors. I have been on the board since 2009 and helped the organization acquire its non-profit (501c3) designation. My background and education are in accounting and I have helped the organization establish a PayPal account and the ability to take credit card transactions for membership and bling.
I would like to continue my efforts to support the organization in 2013.

After a lot of self deliberation and contemplation about running for a memeber at large position on the Board of Directors for Geocache Alaska, I am respectfully withdrawing. There are plenty of others that are very capable of doing an outstanding job at keeping our organization pointed in the right direction and doing exceptional things for our communities.
I want to thank those that apporached me and asked me to consider running for this position. It truely means a lot to me.
Maybe in the years to come in such a great organization that I thouroughly enjoy being a member of, I will reconsider when some of my other commitments change.
Thanks for the opportunity! Dave (dmzlstone)

I (Robert Burton of BurtonsinAK) have been nominated for a member-at-large position on the Geocache Alaska Board.
I am fairly new to geocaching, having started in Sept 2010 and have especially enjoyed learning so much about this excellent activity and meeting a diverse and wonderful community of people. Geocachers are very unique, special and FUN people to spend time with. I accepted the nomination because I want to be involved in and help make Geocache Alaska grow and continue to serve geocachers in Alaska. I'm willing to step up and help when needed and asked and I'll let Fuzzy kiss all the babies!

I originally started caching through the Alaska National Guard in 2005 in preparation for an extended vacation in the Middle East and got restarted in 2010. I am running as a Member at Large and would like the opportunity to support the GeocacheAlaska Organization and all of it's members.

I know the nominations committee is probably working on this behind the scenes, but we have 7 people with intent looking at 4 positions as MAL while we have an unfilled Secretary position. Since the secretary position is a "must be filled" slot, I would encourage everyone running for MAL to consider whether you could perform the duties of Secretary. We are within just 2 days of running the BOD elections, so time is critical. After that, it will become a priority BOD action to find and appoint a Secretary.

I was just looking at the bylaws to see the duties of the secretary. The top one is "Record minutes of all Business Meetings, General Membership Meetings, and Executive Committee Meetings." Later in the bylaws, under "Chapters and Meetings", it says that the Board of Directors must meet at least quarterly.
A couple questions on this...
First, why does the Secretary not record the minutes of the Board of Directors meetings (or maybe a better question is why isn't it listed under the secretary duties)?
Also, what are the Business Meetings and General Membership meetings? And how often do they happen?
How is the BOD different than the EC (ie - which positions are on the BOD that aren't on the EC)?
In the past, when (month/week/time of day) do any of these meetings take place?
Thanks! Cathy aka The_Firefly
