Scott...Thanks for doing this. It's an idea that's been discussed for years and never implemented. I think a Cache of the Month contest could be fun and perhaps encourage more creative/scenic hides.
Do you have any thoughts on formalizing the process so others can also submit favorites for consideration, or would you prefer to keep it your own thing?

I haven't had any thoughts of formalizing.
What was your favorite for the past month.
I need to remember how to ad the GC# as a link. I'll look back at that html class work sheets and try and do that next time.

What was your favorite for the past month. For all caching, my favorite cache during March was Geo Post Office and TB Transfer Station which is the first cache I've used a blue tooth connection with my cell phone to get the combination for a lock on a very nicely done TB Post Office. What was really cool is the "Post Office" has a webcam that cachers can use to take a selfie to later post with their log. My log.Locally, my favorite "cache" was the IV + I = MO' PIE! Event. My favorite physical cache was The Book Nook, housed in a neighborhood mini-library. In these forums, put your cursor in the text box where you want the link, click on the Preview Pane at the bottom of the text box, click on the "Link" icon (globe with sheet of paper partially obscuring it) in the ribbon at the top of the text box, fill in the text and web address, and click "create link."

Fuzzy I love this idea. Our favorite latest cache was the event at the museum.

Ya that event sure sounded awesome. I wish I could have made it. I'm looking forward to seeing a cache come out of the efforts. Where there any good photos taken? I didn't see many if any on the cache page.

Fuzzy's FOM for April, 2015. Here's a few of the leaders for the trophy. 1. "Alaskan Bev Tribute Cache". GC5QZZF, by akerdoc. This one definitely goes on the list of finalists. The hide was very good but who it's a tribute to makes it that much better. A nicer person there aint. I pulled a fuzzybelly hunt on this one while lily ignored me and searched for who knows what else in the area, squirrel. 2. "4 8 15 16 23 42". It's not a bingo score, it's GC1YNN7, by angelfire25. I can't even count how many times I've searched for this one. so many times that I stopped giving DNF's to it. And all the while people kept finding it around all my attempts. It's a large container which made it even more of an amazing smiley once I found it. Very clever. 3. "To close to home to leave alone". GC5GM8B, by southeastalaska. This is one of those traditional hides. It's not a nano in the woods, but it is in the woods. It's a well placed cache that's not easy to find but it's located in an area where you can take the time for a good long search, or 2, maybe 3, if you need. Those are the finalists for Aprils FOM caches. Who will it be taking home the coveted title of fuzzy's April Favorite Of the Month. May I have the envelope please? No not that one. The other one. Over there. No, that one. Oh gezz I'll get it myself. This one. Thank you for the help The winner is........4 8 15 16 23 42 !!!!, by angelfire 25. What an amazing cache. If you haven't found it, get out there and get it. Well, again there wasn't many for me to chose from in April. but May is already off to a good start and there have been a number of great caches that I've found so next months FOM should be quite the battle. I hope you've enjoyed. What are some of your FOMs?

My most memorable cache of the month was Oh Rion!, which featured a beautiful trek up and down Rabbit Creek on an extreme blue day, a wildlife encounter of the extreme kind for one of my dogs, and a happy ending after a few stressful hours.

I remember reading that FTF log of yours. You and those dogs sure have some amazing adventures LBK That hike actually doesn't look to bad. But then again a 3.5 T from an ET is different than a 3.5T for others of us. Still that cache is on my radar. Thanks for reminding me of it and thanks for posting your most memorable of the month. Any body else have any more favorites out there to remind us all about.

Thanks for reminding me of it and thanks for posting your most memorable of the month. Scott and others...the hike is an honest 3.5 stars. It's a nice walk back to the lake with climb up the ridge coming at the end. The ridge climb has a minimum of scrambling and never gets silly steep. One can up the trip to 4 stars because the total roundtrip distance exceeds ten miles by also snagging the McHugh Lake cache that is just a little further and/or FrostGianT's cache on the far side of Rabbit Lake.

Hello to all geocachers. It's time once again for fuzzy's Favorite Of the Month.
It was a good month of caching for me. Took a short trip early in the month to the Kenai and had the chance to grab a few caches then kept the month of smileys going with caches in Birchwood, Peters Creek and of course Anchor town. I added 35 caches to my smiley count in the month of May. Here's a list of the ones that stood out and my FOM.
1. Electrifying (Not), GC5GJ73, by Getatm. Many of us have seen caches similar to this but this ones is just a little different than the norm. If you read my log you'll see that this one even gave me a little scare. I jumped back a bit when I made the find. Thanks getatm.
2. Oh Rion!, GC5DKC7, by AKGH519. I humped my happy rump up to Oh Rion! for some of the most spectacular views in our state and a smiley that I enjoyed with Lily.
3. Meneely at CC, GC5FJ04, by freeweez. You get to do something almost everyone wants to do after you find this one. But remember, it's loud.....very LOUD.
4. THX SR, GC5T6RV, By AKfishgoddess. I started the month off with this FTF at the campground in Copper Landing. If you like searching for needles in a hay stack, and we all know most of us do for some strange reason, you'll like this one.
Those are the caches that really stood out for me this past month, and the one that stood out the most for me was...............................
My FOM for May was, Oh Rion!, by AKGH519. You really have to make a point to get out to this one, It's not the easiest to get to but If I can make it most all of you can too believe me. The smiley is worth it but the journey is the real prize. McHugh, and Rabbit lakes and the surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking.
What where your favorites for the month of May?

Snail Mail For "The Giants" was my favorite Alaskan cache found in May. The camo and cache guardians are terrific and I was introduced to a new trail that connects Rabbit Creek Road with Potter Marsh.

Favorite for June???
Tough call...
It would be between GC5JYYY Shell Game and GC13P2F Hanging Lake Cache. I think I could sit and take the views in at both GZ's all day. Both are worthy of favorite points! (For some reason they aren't taking them)
Another day spent on the trail was the funnest and offered the best vistas of the month but I didn't think I should vote for my own cache that has yet to be published!! ...if only I would sit down and write the cache page!!! ...and a few cache logs too!
Stayed tuned !!

Cool!! Thanks akgh. I really enjoyed checking out those caches. I must say that the caches you search for really make me want to go after them. Love the scenery.
I'd headed down the trail on south fork a few weeks ago and about 1.5 miles in wouldn't you know a group heading back to the trailhead said they saw a bear just off the trail. Dang, time for me to go. I'll try again soon.
But the one I realy want to go to is Shell game. I'd love to see all the historic ruins.
Thanks for telling me about it.

Believe it or not I only got 9 smileys last month. PATHETIC. And two where events. Oh well it's not the number but the experiences.
Two stood out for me in June.
GC12VHV, Xmas in May?, by: oleruns. There where all sorts of shiny things oh which could it be. Believe it or not this cache has lived on since 2007.
GC264BQ, Embrace, by: blazingpathways. One of my favorite trailheads in the Anchorage bowl. I save caches in the area and only grab one at a time when I visit. I always enjoy a BP cache and this one doesn't disappoint.
The winner for June is..........Xmas in May?, by: oleruns. Very nicely placed and distracting hide. If you haven't, go check it out.

Alpine Mine: Well-done micro at a roadside "museum" display of coal mining history in Sutton. I've always intended to stop in the park and this cache coupled with my nephews' need for a rest room (discoverd flush toilets here!) led to a one-hour stop during our trip to the Wrangells as we read the interpretive signs, climbed around the coal wash plant ruins and played in the playground. A Glacier in Discuise (sic): I have stopped at Matanuska Glacier many times and never turned around to see the rock glacier behind me in the Talkeetna Mountains. This EarthCache helped me see a geological feature type I've seen in the Wrangell and Chugach Mountains, but not in the Talkeetna Mountains.

I think I see a trip, north on the glenn highway in my future.
Thanks for posting those caches LBK. The only problem now is, I really want to take that trip up towards Denali in the fall, that I've heard you talk about. Oh which do I do. Both?
|
|
|
Post by ladybugkids on Jul 9, 2015 7:40:35 GMT -9
Scott, you can do both in a two-day loop. My Fall Denali Highway trip was Anchorage to Paxson Lake via the Glenn Highway on Day 1 and then Paxson Lake across the Denali Highway to Cantwell and back to Anchorage on Day 2. Ended up with more than fifty cache finnds by the time I found many of the Alaskan Cachers series on the old sections of the Glenn Highway and then caching out the Denali Highway before reaching the Parks Highway a little before sunset. At about Willow, I drove into the rain storm that dumped snow on the Denali Highway, trapping huntiners and effectively closing the highway for the rest of the year.
I could have easily spent four days on that route enjoying all the trails and views.
Alternatively, Sutton is only an hour from Anchorage making it an easy day trip. I plan on going out there to check out the Jonesville Road, Soapstone Road, and other roads that go into the Talkeetnas.

I think farmergang might be working on something like this for the news letter. He was asking me a few questions a few days ago.
Ya might check in with him and see how he's doing.
I've been getting so few caches lately my list of found caches have been pretty few. I'll try and get a few of my favorites that I did find to him though.
