Army4x4 told me that a cache he found yesterday had a paper coin. This coin was a copy front and back of a real coin... What fun is that? I think you should be able to hold the real coin to log it. People grab sheets of paper with coin numbers on them at events but the coin is there. I guess there is no way to control it but I give it the thumbs down --- V

But there would be no reason to steal that kind of coin. The purchaser of the coin get s the fun of seeing the coin travel and still gets to keep the coin. It sounds kind of like having your cake and Edith too.
Still, I don't even like the writing of coins and TB numbers at events. I like finding the coins in a cache. I say that, but I don't think I have found any coins in any caches.
What if the copy were a replacement for a muggled coin?

I agree with liking to find the TB/Coin in a cache and getting credit for finding/moving/discovering it. Some folks have a rather looooooooooooong list of trackables that far exceeds the number of caches found.

I give the paper coin thing a huge thumbs down also. I don't even log discovered trackables at events anymore. I want to find them, hold them, move them myself. But again, it's the beauty of this game, everyone can choose his own level. If indeed the paper coin was a copy left by someone who stole the coin that is just lame.

I don't like the idea of paper coins. I have read several stateside forums where folks have gone to paper coins due to theft. This is a truely sad reflection of people, if they want to play the game, do just that, don't take things from the rest of us. I wouldn't log a paper coin. I like to see them all, actually discover them. Some of the concepts are very cool. I will contiue to release/discover/move along coins and TBs as it adds more the game and keeps me outside enjoying life (even when it is -20)

Paper Coins, Thumbs Down! I feel it takes from the game. We enjoy finding the Coin or Travel Bugs. Just the smiles on my childrens faces to find a coin, "BIG piece of money", and wondering where we can stop on the way home for a sodapop that they will buy with their coin is evident enough for me not to want to find a piece of paper in the cache. I feel it takes away from the game also. Sending the coin or TB out on its mission is the a chance you take with that coin on getting it stolen or lost.

I have come across 3 or 4 paper coins. I am new would like to hold them in my hand see what they look like. I know it stinks when someone steals one but its stealing to me when I can actuly hold a coin in my hand i only hold a laminated sheet of paper.

I have had that happen to a few of my coins and you're right, it's wrong. I hate it when I get an email from someone telling me I need to put out the real coins because it let's me know someone stole my coin and replaced it with paper. Oh well, that's the world we live in these days.

I've was just talking with Po1ar last night about releasing one of my geogems to travel and we wondered how long it'll be before it gets stolen and/or paperized-
I even thought about writing it up as the mission- a gem released on "faith" to see how long it could go before someone takes it. But, after reading everyone's posts it has put clear words to my thoughts. The fun of finding them, for those of us who will pass them on, is worth setting them forth on the journey for however long that journey lasts. It just kinda mimics life that way I guess LOL.

Aw, set it free! I'd love to find it and move it on.
We have about three dozen geocoins in the wild. Some disappeared on their first hop, others have continued to move for quite awhile for distances of over 19,000 miles and counting. Our coins that make it to Europe seem to have the best longevity, but we also have a couple that are running around Asia and Japan. It's really fun to vicariously travel with your coins, especially when someone posts a photo of an exotic far away place.

Just activated it today. It's the GeoSapphire. We hope to put it in CITO-n-GO #5 (GC12GQJ) this weekend ;D

Before Chris' Summer Survival Cache came up missing there had been a paper coin plaed in it. Now Chris is 7 years old and at least every weekend in the late late night, I would take him to check on his cache. It actually upset him to see the paper coin. I too had never seen one before, but I told him that maybe the owner wated to keep the original so it wouldnt get stolen. I never actually thought that someone would steal it then replace it with a paper copy. I believe that the actual coin should be put in the caches and the color copies should be for your personal records. Honestly these are supposed to be out getting miles visiting many places.

It's one of the two most 'liberating' things we do as geocachers - to release a trackable 'into the wild' (the other one, of course, is to place a cache). I've had coins & trackables lost/stolen etc.; I've had caches go missing too. Never placed or 'launched' a paper facsimile of either. I figure once I put it out, it's as good as gone. Any travel is a serious bonus. I have some that have gone tens of thousands of miles, and some trackables (my own) that are in hiding in my collection.
Perhaps the same folks who have a hard time releasing a trackable have a hard time placing caches for the same reason - they're worried about them getting stolen...
