This year's scheduled EduVents will be on the following dates:
February 21 March 21 April 18 May 16 September 5 October 24 November 21 Request topic suggestions from the membership.
So far, we have an Outdoor Safety session planned for Feb and a Pathtags session planned for March.
New for 2013... we have historically only been able to use the BP Energy Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They have just opened the center up to organization use on any weeknight from Monday through Friday. Thus, there are options for doing events on other days of the week now. If there is interest in this, please post or talk to a board member about your thoughts.

1. I missed the puzzle event, lets do it again. 2. Fundamentals and beginner caching. If we could bring in more newbies, and I think we can. 3. Cache finding and hiding.
more later Thanks SSO JOAT

I really think we're going to have some new folks at Edu-events this year. I think efforts from the past year may boost some attendee numbers. Still doing some of the basic classes may be needed, and It would be a good way to get new presenters, they already know the gig. Hey Burtons, was it that obvious I was fishing for some hints on puzzles? BTW, what happened to the list of events that JOAT had posted originally on the first thread. How about an Edu-event on GeocacheAlaska.org, it's web page, and the Forum page. I'll bet many would learn how to use these places from the ways others use them. Or a brain storming session where the whole group speaks up on the topics.

Or a brain storming session where the whole group speaks up on the topics. I think a "GeocacheAlaska! Resources" FUNdamentals event would be beneficial for a lot of folks. I'm always amazed by some saying, "I didn't know where to find..." when it's second nature for me. I keep having to remind myself that I was the originator on a lot of the resources and continue to work closely with SSO JOAT, so I have my fingers in the website and forums almost daily. I can't speak to Facebook updates or functionality as I don't maintain a Facebook account. On a separate topic, I'm thinking an index of Newsletter articles might be a handy resource. I had to "pin the tail on the donkey" to find the correct 2011 issue that had the Winter Trail Etiquette article to rerun in the January 2013 issue. Thoughts?

Fuzzball... I moved your msg from the 2012 EduVent thread over to the 2013 EduVent thread. The list of old stuff is over in the 2012 thread, but I want to talk about 2013 stuff. We did 3 puzzle solving classes. They are all posted on our Education Page. While it's OK to occasionally toss in a basics class, we spent most of 2012 redoing the basics. I think we really need to inject a few new topics into the mix. For the Spring sessions (Feb-May) we are already looking at Outdoor Safety and Pathtags as new topics. Talk of a forums/website class has been tossed about the last couple weeks, so I'm thinking we can call that an April topic. And then we can finish off the Spring with a rehash of a basics class or basics compilation in May. We'll worry about the Fall sessions after Memorial Day, but I think we have a fairly decent set of topics forming up for the next 4 sessions. Newsletter Archive... Yes, this is a priority item on my website rebuild list. Each Newsletter is going to have a topic summary with cover photo. I just hope we end up with an Editor that will keep the publication going forward so the archive doesn't end up a historical document.

That's fuzzybald,
I'm hoping we have new people attending who won't recognize the redone material, but You're right new material would be great. And latter in the year we'll know if we're getting newer attenders, and not just the same o'l folks.

Yes, Feb 21 is going to be a presentation on Outdoor Safety based from Anchorage. I'll start working up the listing pretty soon. Once you have details for a Fairbanks site, email them to me and I'll build a page for you.
We're slated to have a presentation on Pathtags hosted from Fairbanks for March 21. So you guys are going to be the star site on that one. We'll need to make sure the transmission side of your audio feed is going to be good to go.
Do you have access to a landline speakerphone setup at the library site?

yes we have the Library for Feb 21st, and they say they have equipment for teleconferences, both video and phone.
now only problem is we can't do back to back months at the Library so I will have to ask Joanne if she has a location to do the class from in March?

Yo, Tony...
I've got our next EduVent listings all roughed in and just about ready to publish (aiming for tomorrow). I need the details of your site up there. Name of the location (a library?). Kids allowed? Food? Beverages? Parking? Any other details to put on the listing so attendees will know what to bring and what not to bring.
Thanks!

OK, so I'm going to go ahead and push the listings to publish. When you get a chance, read the Fairbanks listing, check the coords, attributes, etc. and get back to me on what needs to be changed. I also need to know if your library has a name and where the meeting is going to occur inside the library. Is the site wheelchair accessible? Anchorage is coord.info/GC45FJPFairbanks is coord.info/GC45FK1

At some point I would like to get a Geocaching, Travel Bugs, and Cache Placement EduVent down here in Homer. I'm wondering about doing an intro to geocaching presentation after the Learning Lab event. Thoughts?

First question... We run our monthly EduVents with state-wide (and occasionally world-wide) broadcast via WebEx. These are generally on a Thursday night from 7-8pm, and typically the 2nd or 3rd Thursday of the month to coincide with our BoD meetings. Can Homer tap into these broadcast events from the Islands & Oceans facility? All you need is a computer on the internet with a big screen that can carry the live PowerPoint presentation feed and a speaker phone with enough volume that anyone in the room can hear it. This carries the live presentation's audio component and we provide a toll free number to dial in. FireFly hosted a remote site a couple times in the past, I believe at the library, but the weeknight delivery didn't fit schedules very well. If you want to try a host a remote site during one of our broadcast EduVents, let me know. We can hook you up for our next event on Feb 21, which is going to be on Outdoor Safety, if you want to give it a try. Second option is to run a separate event that complies with your timeline. I am going to be doing a 3 hour intro class in Soldotna on March 23, which is a Saturday. We can setup something like this for Homer and if we work out the schedule to fit my chaos, I'd be happy to come down and instruct or help instruct if you want to tag-team. www.ci.soldotna.ak.us/community_schools_class_description.htm#27

I like the idea of presenting 'Resources available at GeocacheAlaska.org' and 'How to use the GCAK Forum' as an event. Very much like that idea. We can cheerlead for more photos, more forum participation etc.

Could do this concurrently with a newsletter article.

I had posted this in the Sandbox previously, but the intent is to run a detailed forum use article in the newsletter next month (March edition) followed by an EduVent presentation the month after that (April). This just leave us with the May EduVent to fill in with a topic and presenter.

So, we're doing 2 separate events here in Homer on March 2. One is the GPS and Navigation lab you see on the GeocacheAlaska! homepage. That event is more like the "Discovery Labs" that the Kachekmak Bay Research Reserve puts on. Meaning, there are 8 tables, and different information at all of them. One table is about geocaching, and the rest are different, but include how GPS works, history of Navigation, etc.
The other is a Geocaching 101 event I'm putting on as well. We had requests from the Girl and Boy Scout troops to address some badge requirements. Also, some of the folks from the previous lab might want to keep the momentum going and learn more about this wonderful game.
One unforseen aspect of the first event is the demand in this boater-focused fishing town is marine GPS. As most geocaches don't really involve serious seagoing navigation, we hadn't planned on any support for the demand we've received. To that end, I'm trying to partner with the USCG Auxiliary in town to put on one of their classes on boater GPS use. Not unlike a "how to" for handhelds that is part of some of the intro geocaching stuff, their course goes over marine GPS use and claims to make knowledgeable users out of n00bs.
So, if you want to partner with USCG, they might be receptive to getting something done. I'll let you know how my inquiry to get someone to attend the 1-3pm lab goes. Other than that, it's food for thought in terms of outreach that is available to we GPS users, especially the boaters among us.
