I'm entering the planning phase for this summer's now annual picnic event for the Soldotna/Kenai area.
I will be exploring other park options to include the Kenai Municipal Park on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the river. Soldotna Creek Park is still an option, but we've been using that park every year and I'd like to mix it up a bit if for no other reason than to use a clean slate for the cache finding game.
Date wise, I'm targeting Saturday, July 28th as my first choice. I'm also open to Sunday the 29th as well as the previous weekend of the 21st or 22nd.
Taking suggestions now...

The date hath been settled. We're running the Kenai River Picnic on Sunday July 29th. The only remaining question is whether the event will take place at the Kenai Municipal Park on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Kenai River, or if it will remain at the Soldotna Creek Park on the bank of the Kenai River. Cache page is under development and will be published as soon as the site is settled and reserved.

Looking forward to it! I've learned something at each of the previous ones I've attended, and had a lot of fun doing it!

Kenai Municipal Park it is! Reservation is in. Sunday, July 29th. Let's start at Noon, which gives those in Anchorage plenty of time to drive down that morning (dodging dipnetters on the highway).

Nice! Any way you can work in the Kenai King or equivalent? If we hurry, we could get a Nomad or something made up.

Hmmm, you'll have to explain to me what we would work a Kenai King into? I'm sure I could fit one on the BBQ if someone has one to share. We'll have to talk about the Nomad idea. Wanna move that to the sandbox thread and talk designs and prices?

This sounds so fun. I've heard others talk of this one. I know Coloreido had a good time, he's mentioned it a few times. I'm not good at puzzles, but I'm good at eatin the food, that's for sure And I got a side dish that we really enjoy. And better yet, I think Mrs. fuzzy may even be able to make it. I mean to the event, not the side dish, although you all may wish she had Any Ideas where a cacher may pull a camper into, down in the area? I've never camped there, so I'm hoping there are spots available. I can't wait, thanks for hosting.

Don't worry fuzzy, the majority of the daycaching game is traditionals. I always toss in at least a couple multi's and a puzzle that are all worth more "points". I like putting out a temporary puzzle that requires the use of a physical device rather than a cache listing. The year 1 and 3 puzzles were tried by a few, but no one solved them (we didn't run a caching game in year 2, just a simple picnic). Of course I give the solution to the puzzle at the end, which is always received with a couple "duhs" and a whole bunch of "you're an evil puzzle genius".
Working on getting that camping site listing together. Still haven't been able to hook up with my Forrest Friend to see if we can secure some camping sites specific to this event, but it's high on my to-do list. Will post here and to the cache listing when I have details.

The Redoubt Reporter published a really nice article about the picnic and geocaching in general today. You can view the online version of the article here: The Redoubt ReporterThe picnic was GC3EN6B and it was another great success this year. Planning for the 5th annual picnic in 2013 has commenced. The candidates are the weekend of July 13-14, August 3-4, or August 10-11. Probably won't be able to settle on a particular weekend until next Spring due to schedule flux. I do kinda like the thematic possibilities of a 7-13-13 picnic.
