I will be creating a form that will help us focus on the GeAK! purpose for events, but in the meantime. Make suggestions, volunteer or offer help.

There had been a suggestion early on that we consider hosting a "large" event each quarter and rotate them to different areas in the state (sort of reserving 4Q for the Geofest in Anchorage for 2011).

One thought was something in the Valley in Spring, Salmon Caching on the Kenai in early summer, Valdez Gold Rush Days in August.

I think that's a good idea and should involve too much of an overextension.

The Sonai (Soldotna/Kenai) event will have to be held on one of these 3 weekends: June 18/19 July 9/10 July 16/17
Suggestions for a weekend? I'd suggest July for it to coincide with salmon fishing, though June would have less in the way of tourist crowds.
Saturday vs Sunday?
I believe the only logical location for a large event is the Soldotna Creek Park. Good facilities and it's very cheap to rent the picnic pavillion. Summer weekends get booked up early, so we'll need to move forward with a date as soon as it is settled. I will be the point of contact for dealing with Soldotna City Parks.

Scott, I'd pick the weekend that most coincides with highest average red salmon runs at Soldotna, and do it on a Saturday. Touristas just mean more folks to see our banners!

Well, that would be Saturday, July 16th, of course!

I'd be only selfish to suggest another date ... so I won't!

Well, that would be Saturday, July 16th, of course! Sounds like a good idea. It's been years since we've ventured beyond Hidden/Skilak Lakes in the summertime. Tough choice...kings in May/June or reds in July. The reds are most accessible to the greatest number of folks.

A red run to the Sonai for a Smiley... or is it a Smiley run to the Sonai with perhaps some reds on the side? Regardless, it will be fun...

Since Kings are such tough critters to find and new regulations make fishing for them nearly nightmarish, I stay well clear of King fishing.
Reds are pretty easy, don't require much gear, and plentiful enough that the below average angler has a good chance of "flossing" one in. If we use Soldotna Creek Park, our event is literally 100 yards from prime fishing territory.

So, how about I reserve the park for Saturday, July 16th so we have a date to start planning with? Wait too long and we'll lose the premium spots...

Anyone have a problem with moving the Kenai River event back a weekend to July 9th? I've just lost the next week & weekend to a busy project season at work.

July 9th is formally reserved for Soldotna Creek Park. We have the picnic pavilion from noon to 4pm. I'll break out the daycaching game I did a couple years ago and get it setup to run again. Everyone really enjoyed that last time and I'm sure I can come up with a couple new twists to throw in there.
Hope everyone will plan to be there!

Creeeaaaak,....Hello, is anybody in here? It sure is dark in here, where's the light swi, ah there it is.
Has any of those Earth Cache masters though of doing another Earthcaching Event? That one at Potters marsh was a blast.
Isn't there another holiday like festivus or something on the horizon. Are we due for another breakfast event?

I'd love to do an earthcache event again. I have several cooking for publication later in the winter. One in May would be great & I'd host it. As I recall, I was doing the 11 earthcaches on the Liberty State Park (NJ) Earthcache Power Trail on last fall's Int'l Earthcache Day. (Yeah - that's the NJ State Park that superstorm Sandy almost wiped off the map - right behind Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty) Look at Fairbanks - "Int'l Tin Can Day" - and I LOVE breakfast gatherings. Breakfast anytime! What is 'festivus'?

My apologies fuzzy. I should have been in this forum much sooner. That said, now I need to catch up and see what is happening. I am thinking one of my New Year's resolutions should be to look into the forums at least once a week. Hmmm, a good use of my GeocacheAlaska! calendar.

****message to EVERYONE****
World wide CITO weekend is April 20-21. It's a little early for our first of three CITO's we do down near Girdwood, but we're looking for a spot or two that could use some geocacher tender loving care.
You all are out in the field caching. Where have you been that could use our help?
if you want, hosting a CITO event is as easy as creating the cache page with coords of where to meet, then point the way where the clean up is needed. Cachers love CITO's, they'll show up in droves, and It gets you a different icon on your profile page.
AND!!!! GeocacheAlaska will help you, if you're not sure how to get it all started.
So where are some spots that need a cleaning?
