I was driving home from work tonight, which takes down Spenard and there appears to be a new military surplus shop opening up in the old French Oven Bakery location, almost across from Second Chance.
It's named The Ammo Can. If someone checks it out, let us all know how it is and what the prices are like :-)

I went by Ammo Can yesterday at their old location on Dimond next to Village Inn and found they are moving. I will have to check out their new location. Thanks for the information.

I made their signage this past week & had a nice chat with the owner about geocaching. Told him cachers were interested primarily in Decon containers and of course ammo cans. He said once he's unpacked from the move he'll find both items and get 'em set out were cachers can see 'em. Aren't we fortunate to have several retail sources in town for ammo cans? And they're geographically well-distributed now too.
(on an off-topic note - he's the local distributor for the awesome GSG-5 .22cal rifle; one of the shop guys purchased one just before the move and it's definitively in the 'awesome' category - if you're a gun nut like I am...)

That just goes to show how much I know :-) I didn't realize they were originally located on Dimond Blvd. I thought it was kind of odd that they decided to relocate so close to Second Chance - maybe that section of Spenard can become the new military surplus district? We have SoNo, why not a military surplus district? (SoNo=South of Nordstrom)
Wow, I didn't realize you were a "gun nut". I know I've only met you a couple times, but based on your appearance, I'd put you in the "afficianado" category - at worst "collector" - lol. When I think of the term gun nut, I have this image of a guy in face paint and camo in the woods, a la Montana Freemen, surviving off the land, preparing for a government takeover ;-)

Expensive .22 $489.95 I could almost buy an Oregon for that!!

Actually, that price for a specialty type .22 isn't all that bad. I am thinking of buying/ building a nice tack driver .22 and it will probably cost twice that much. Thats an interesting looking weapon though.

Geocaching is the perfect cover . I love Alaska in that way. It may be the 21st century, but you still can never, ever judge a book by it's cover. ;D

I saw the place and immediately thought it needs a cache. Hmmmm.

...He doesn't want anyone to know about that. Geocaching is the perfect cover . I love Alaska in that way. It may be the 21st century, but you still can never, ever judge a book by it's cover. ;D Awww - I only wear facepaint when I hunt turkeys. I've actively hunted since I was ten years old, but that's a lesser part of my gun hobby. I took up riflery as a sport when I moved to Anchorage in 1974 & was told I was too little to play football for Bartlett. To help ease the rejection they showed me their brand-new indoor rifle range. I ended up spending an average of 22 hours a week in my junior & senior years on that range (in those days we used .22 rifles - now they use .177 air rifles - much more challenging, actually). After college & returning to Alaska, I took up the game again as a coach (East HS) for a bit, and then found out about NRA-sanctioned Long Distance Rifle Matches... oooh... those are fun! From 200 yards to 600 yards at a Ft Richardson rifle range at least once a month from spring through fall - until my kids got to the age where dad needed all those Saturdays to be dad for their sake (and not my hobby's sake). I'm sure I'll be back out there soon... after all, I'm part of a team that holds the M1 Garand AK State Record for the half-course Infantry Trophy Combat Match (which is more fun than a barrel-full of FTFs on caches... but only if you're a bit of a gun nut, I admit). In this photo I'm using an NRA Match Rifle (Remington 40x Repeater in .308) to shoot a rapid fire course at 300 yards (ten rounds in sixty seconds from a bolt gun - reloading a five-round stripper clip once during the sixty seconds). And so this is why I definitively perked up and waited on Lou from the Ammo Can when he walked in the business where I work (oh - and I wanted to find out if he had any Decons, too... really!) The photo also helps my friends understand why a bit more hard of hearing than most guys my age - it wasn't the rock'n'roll on the radio!

Well, I stopped in to the new store yesterday, they of course are still setting things up and everything but I found what I'd come for. They have the best retail deal in town on .223 ammo. I have a hard time saying "best deal" since it is now $0.40 a round, more than triple what I paid as a kid. I guess there are a lot of things that cost triple what they once did though.
They did have several decent deals on large bore revolvers incase any cachers are in the market for "bear spray". Christmas is coming you know and nothing says love like a large calibre handgun!
Oh yeah, nice signage NorthWes
