Thanks to heightened efforts by the Muni Parks & Rec department to (in part) encourage 'bear aware' behavior on the part of park users, trail closures are being implemented in specific areas as deemed necessary by park managers, for the safety of park users.
This thread will be used to announce those closures as they occur, and to announce when the trail is re-opened for use. Don't hesitate to post closures / openings as you're aware of them!
Please remember that persons found in an officially-closed area will be cited for trespass under muni code. (And since there's usually active 'bear management' underway in those closure areas, trespassers may find themselves captured on film by trail cameras emplaced to monitor bear activity. It's already happened on the Rovers Run Trail to single-track bikers...)

BEACH LAKE TRAIL SYSTEM near Chugiak High School is closed as of August 20 2008 until further notice. Reason for closure: Brown bear feeding on moose carcass Authority ordering closure: Anchorage Police Dept (APD) Area of closure: entire Beach Lake Trail System Map of trail system: www.ernsc.org/attachments/ernsc_beachlakemap.pdfComments: APD closed the area after Chugiak HS - based police officers witnessed the brown bear on a moose kill. ADF&G personnel are to attempt to clear out the carcass and the bear as soon as possible. This trail system does not typically have as wide a trail cut as Kincaid Park's trails, and line of sight on the Beach Lake trails is pretty reduced in the summertime. You can be on a bear or moose quite suddenly while traveling these trails. It's a great trail system, and the 'Junkyard Loop' area is quite spooky to cache!

Canyon Road Trail head into Chugach State Park (off Dearmon Rd) has been closed due to a bear aggressively defending a moose carcass at the trailhead. It may be reopened within a day or so if ADFG is successful in removing the carcass today (9-10-08).
Beach Lake Trails have reopened.

Botanical Garden closes after bear kills moose near fence
According to an Anchorage Daily News breaking story dated September 25th, 2008 09:20 AM: A bear feasting on a moose carcass along the perimeter fence of Alaska Botanical Garden Tuesday morning has prompted officials to close the facility. The garden will be closed to public use until Oct. 10 to give the bear time to finish its carcass and move along.
Garden staff and volunteers are also limiting their activity during cleanup week to avoid confrontations with the animal. As a result, garden beds do not have to be cleaned up this week, and officials are asking volunteers to avoid going into the garden alone or at dawn and dusk. Depending on what the bear does, officials said, they might cancel all remaining activities for 2008.
Please note that the Alaska Botanical Garden is a large swath of land on the northeast side of Far North Bicentennial Park. The Garden's west edge abuts Campbell Airstrip Road, and its south edge is bordered by the mushing trail which runs under Campbell Airstrip Rd. I suggest the area north of the North Fork of Campbell Creek and east of Campbell Airstrip Rd and south of Tudor Rd and west of the cell tower and its approaches (on the east side of the Botanical Garden) be avoided as part of this closure.
