From a press release by the BLM's Campbell Science Center:
Mark your calendars! Winter Trails Day 2008 is February 16, 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Winter Trails Day is designed to promote responsible winter recreation on our public lands. The event also helps connect trail users with various recreation groups in Anchorage. Activities offered at this annual event typically include free use of cross-country skis, skate skis, and snowshoes (provided courtesy of REI); a GPS navigation and geocache activity; a self-guided snowshoe hike; and clinics on winter camping, avalanche beacons, snow shelter construction, skijoring, winter mountain biking, and ski-waxing.
Hmmm... I haven't seen an event listing go up for this yet... I wonder who the event sponsor's going to be this year? I'll bet it's to be Davder or the like... in any case, mark it on your calendars and plan to be there. It would be pretty cool to do a 'group cache run' of hides near the Tour of Anchorage Multi-Use trail and elsewhere in the park...
Just remember that the airstrip itself is now off-limits to travel (big fine for that violation, or for loose dogs on the BLM's Campbell Tract... serious fines - more than $100 per occurence - and it's patrolled now by a BLM Resource Ranger!)

If I remember right last year they didn't put up an event cache. They just had the Winter Trails day info threw REI. And they placed the multi cache GC10Q1H. So unless they do something different this year we will have to find out threw REI what will be set up for the geocaching part of Winter Trails Day. Unfortunatly I have to work on saturdays till 1pm so if I get a chance to go it will be after the event starts

I was speaking with BLM's event coordinator today; she's checking to make sure they don't fall afoul of the two-week advance planning rule (which ate their event listing last year). The expectation is that an REI staffer will probably 'host' the event listing, since REI is the host for geocaching & GPS stuff at the event.

Put in on my calendar, If I am not out skiing or at spin class with my daughter I should be able to make it. Saturday's were reserved for Gym but think that has changed now!

Guper Seekie was very vague on whether REI would put out a cache for this event. They are running out of room.

From the REI Outreach Coordinator: I was wondering if you could post this event for us. It’s a free event that we do every year (no parking fees, no rental fees, nothing for sale, just a day of encouraging peopleto get outside). Geocaching will not post it as an event because it is not a “gathering” at one time. Anyways, the event is a temporary cache aimed at beginners. It is a geocaching event within Winter Trails Day. The event is free (free parking and even free snowshoes to use when hiking in the woods. We’ll also have loaner GPS units for people to use and for those who find the end cache; they will be entered in a raffle for a GPS unit. The event starts with the coordinates to the fire pit where we’ll be standing, staying warm, ready to give the next point of the multi-cache. The cache will consist of 2 point caches & a final goody box which then sends you back to the fire pit. We’ll have hot cocoa nearby. The coordinates are below. It on fairly flat ground, using trails with some travel in the woods. Snowshoes will be needed and are available as a free rental. 2008 Winter Trails Day Event Cache February 16, 2008 BLM Campbell Creek Science Center www.blm.gov/ak/st/en/prog/sciencecenter/ccsc_calendar.htmlThis cache is a beginner's multi cache. Grab some snowshoes first, and then fire up your GPS. This cache is only out for WTD on February 16th. Starting time is 10:30 AM. Start out with micro-caches leading up to the final goody cache. Be sure to get a ticket at the starting point (above lat/long) to place in the final cache to be entered in the GPS give away. Come join us at the Campbell Creek Science Center on February 16th from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM for Winter Trails Day. This Geocache challenge is just one of the many things to do. Try Nordic skiing, snowshoeing or the transceiver course with gear provided by REI. Watch skijoring demos, view dog sled racing or drink hot cocoa by the fire. You may need to bring snowshoes or demo some to complete this cache. I am trying to get the day off from work to make it there early so IF i can I will be there at 10am. Also, because REI isn't planning on putting out any permanent caches I was thinking of going out tomarrow and seeing if I could find a place for one, maybe I can get it published the same day as the event.

Any intrest in setting up a group to go out for this one? I have a GPS/Geocaching/Snowshoeing class on Saturday at 1pm. Not sure how many have signed up so far but the last class had 7 of the 8 seats filled! ( I volunteer at Elmendorf AFB, Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) to teach classes and help on bicycle rides too). So if no one has signed up I would like to be there, but depends on the Mrs and her needs for the day.

I wish this thing kicked off a little earlier. I'd love to come over to the park but I'm forced to be downtown at the town square park by 11a.m.!
There is a military "top rock" curling competition taking place from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Everyone and anyone are welcome to stop by if you aren't too tuckered out from snowshoe caching.
I guess my secret is out now. Geocaching isn't the only nerdy activity I enjoy, I'm also into Curling! ;D
I might just MAKE time to pop over to the park in the a.m. It's only a couple blocks from the house. Consider me a definite maybe!

I'd love to try curling!!!!!!!!! Curling Rocks! sorry for the bad pun. My first cache is over by the Anchorage Curling Club. I placed it shortly after learning to play. They have three rookie bonspeils a year. I'm not sure when the last one is. It is a great game for all ages, one of the good players is over 80 years old, he taught me quite a lot.

Sooooo, how was the Winter Trails Day? What'd I miss? Any good stories? tell me tell me.
I got a call about 9:45 as I was heading out. The caller informed me that our outdoor curling match was moved indoors to the regular curling club due to weather. It's amazing how a little snow will slow down a 44# curling rock. Along with moving indoors the game times were also moved up so I made a mad dash to the club and just made it in time.
The Alaska ANG team took 4th place. Not too bad considering I was the only one with any experience. We lost one player in the first match after the second fall, whacking one's head on the ice not once but twice in one game is a good reason to sit out. This person actually went to the hospital to get checked out for concussion but rumor has it they'll be fine except for the headache, facial bruising and a cut lip. The Canadian team took 1st place (big surprise eh) That pretty much killed my day off. I did stop by for one cache on my way home but with the failing light and an already long day all I needed was a soak in the hot tub!
Hope everyone had a good time on the trails, wish I could have done both events.
