Found my first benchmark that hadn't been found before and my furthest north. I got it before NorthWes.

Odd, that GPSr looks like mine.
This is now a two for one benchmark as there is a cache very close by and two more just around the bend.
Well worth the drive if you are looking for something to do this summer.

I found this BM today on the drive too. Also found TT3222 near Poker Anyone cache. It also had not been logged. Attached is the pic of a BM I'm having trouble identifing and would appreciate some help. I found it at N65 04.802 W147 26.007. It is on the town side of Chatanika Lodge and Gold Dredge 3. The designation on it is X121 and is near a white marker sign on a copper rod about 3 feet above the ground. Searching on line shows TT3216 as the closest, but says it's C54. img.geocaching.com/cache/log/ddc5b2e4-bac0-4b77-90ce-7c22ffe8cd58.jpg[/img] Tried to insert the pic, but seems beyond my html expertise. I clicked the image icon and inserted the address, but... Go to Gold Dredge No.3 (GCQ242) and you'll see the BM.

Found my first benchmark that hadn't been found before and my furthest north. I got it before NorthWes. That's a nice find along the Steece Highway there! I haven't been north of Talkeetna in years... I salivate over how many benchmarks lie about just off the highways up north, waiting to be rediscovered.

I can't make out the other info on the brass cap - such as the part at bottom that bears a curious resemblance to the word 'corner'. The mark is probably part of a cadastral survey (used to set boundaries) versus the full survey regimen that sets the mark in three dimension relative to the rest of the national geodetic control network. Cadastral survey markers aren't considered to be good enough quality of work to enter into the national network. Curiously, geocaching.com's database is out of date, as there's hundreds and hundreds of marks in the NGS database that aren't in the geocaching.com listings (I've found and reported several of those just last Saturday down here in Michigan).

Sorry, that's the best pic I got. First benchmark I found stuck up 3 feet in the air. Bank was pretty steep there and I just had to hold the camera over it for a poke and hope shot. Tried getting up hill for the snapshot but the alder was being a typical pain. I need to head back that way sometime and capture Dr. Bleh and I'll write down all the info and e-mail you. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. I see that it says NGS Bench Mark and the Station ID is X something and the year is 1965?. I looked in the NGS database for the data sheet and nothing pops up. Could it have been a temporary that was never removed?

The designation on it is X121 Well, based on a search I did on the NGS website, there's no geodetic control stations in the National Database with that name or at that Lat/Lon. Must be this is one of the many cadastral survey markers scattered around all the federally-managed/owned lands we have up here in Alaska!

Thanks for checking. I do plan on stopping out there on my next trip by. Maybe I'll refresh my old grave marker rubbing skills and make a copy.

Stopped by there and looked the bench mark over again. The outside edge reads " US COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY BENCHMARK". The center has an X121 and dated 1965. Right next to the benchmark is a white sign that seems to be next to most the markers along this strech of road.

Well, I ran this through the extended NGS database (lots of markers that aren't in the geocaching.com database) and there's still no match for an X 121 designation. There's not an X 121 or X121 listed anywhere in Alaska! The nearest markers are TT3214 and TT3216 - both of which are in a '54' number series.
My conclusion would be this is a cadastral survey marker set out for the purposes of marking federal lands boundaries. It's not in the databases accessible by the internet... Sorry!

Oh well, benchmarking continues to give me fits. I will blame this one Dr. Bleh. Afterall there is now a cache just up the road with his name all over it.
