Have you found a really cool cache made by an Alaskan geocacher? Be sure to provide a link to the cache that stands out to you, and I can help create a list of links to present some of the Great Makers in Alaska!

I received info about this in an email... That's where I heard first as well--from the weekly Groundspeak email. I do know plenty of folks that don't even open those emails, however! So...are there cachers or caches we want to celebrate?

These recognition events would be good for the resumes of future Alaskan Caches who might get nominated for the COTM award.
I would think Ladybugkids(destination caches), jackcat14(clever camo caches),Karma(creative idea caches), Alaskan Bev(Kind cacher).
These are just a few cachers I always enjoy running into and their hides I always look forward to searching for.

Not sure I like this. So, GS is going from "any event or cache find on XX date gets a souvenir", to this concept of creating an event on specified date(s) and after it is published, you have to submit it to another branch of the GS heirarchy to be judged as worthy of being included in the souvenir in question. Thus, you could go to the trouble of making an event and have it not included, but you don't get to know until after the fact. Yeah, I don't like that idea at all.

Did this just turn into the geocaching forums?

Take a read through the whole of the blog post. There are many hoops to jump through for a cache to become a "Maker Madness" souvenir earning event, yes. That's how I read it, at least. I really like the idea of recognizing people in our midst that make the game possible. If Groundspeak wants to award a souvenir to help encourage their users to celebrate people they value for their input into the game, that's great! I think what we have here with this initiative is the opportunity to recognize some of our Alaskan cachers (ala CACHE Committee), and have the focus of an event be on that recognition. What a great way to encourage the greater community to come together and celebrate! My hope is to see more events get created that are celebratory and bring people together for more than just a quick event. We should embrace this opportunity to come together and recognize each other (Like you, Scott, for all of your amazing puzzles!!). If we get a digital souvenir from Groundspeak for it, that's just icing on the cake. If the souvenir is what motivates people to attend or create an event, that's great too...but we should be coming together as a community in Alaska to encourage people to have events really take the time to recognize people. So, CACHE committee folks, other members of GeocacheAlaska!, let's see those events get published to celebrate each other--not just have one to get another smilie!

My perception of this Maker Event concept is that groundspeak is trying to boost the "quality" of cache placements. A comment passed my way last evening from the east coast of the USA remarked in part about how certain land manager entities feel overwhelmed by 'junk micro' placements. That being said, it's a bit complicated, isn't it?
I'm posting an event today for 27 March as a '64 Earthquake commemorative; I was hoping to use it as a follow-on "Maker Event" just a week after the 20 March EduVent (highlighting an EarthCache I'm hoping to publish at the event site). Date's off by a day - oh well...
