I'll have another "free-for-all" lab coming out from my personal account down here in Homer. Stay tuned!

Cracking me up Scott! I love geocaching. It's that slightly odd cache type available this month only. Like I've got time, unfortunately!

I've been hearing about this new part of the game , but I've never been one for new things. I never gave the "challenges" a try when they came out then they where gone. I'm all for change and everything....................................OK, no I'm not (you had to know THAT was coming) I've followed some opinions but I'm still up in the air about it. BTW- have they sorted out any of the statistic issues they're having with it?

I have no idea about the stats side of this. And it's a one-time-only February thing. It might become a new part of the game, it might not. Still just a simple thing to do in addition to a few (couple) caches out there for now. But I get it...you just don't want to come to Homer!

You just have to parnter up with another Premium Member to do it. Each writes up a "lab cache" for the other one and sends the link. Each PM only gets to make one of these "virtual caches" and it can only be found by one person. So it isn't intended to be something that is shared with the public. As to the stats, when you complete one, you get a find added to your count. In the stats break down, it will be shown as a "lab cache" once they finish up the changes to the stat generating code. Go to this site to build one... labbuilder.geocaching.com/iheartgeocaching As to whether this becomes a regular caching feature, I suspect that it will not, especially with the huge number of seemingly disgruntled geocachers. I'm always surprised at the level of negativity that comes out of a segment of cachers (and notably the ones who spend all day on the national forums complaining about everything) when a new idea pops up. They really beat down the challenges until that system was retired. And with GS keeping the challenge stats separate from everything, it didn't matter to the number hounds that some people liked challenges and that they didn't skew statistics at all. Since this lab cache test includes stats that do affect your overall numbers, it is probably going to be opposed quite loudly. It looks to me like GS has taken the simple form layout of the challenges and added a validation code. In a way it is like a puzzle cache and a virtual cache wrapped up into a self-controlled listing. Once the CO writes it, they don't have to be involved in the process of validating emailed answers from the finders. They write the listing up with anything from straight forward directions to a tricky puzzle. The finder goes to the coordinates and uses the description to figure out what the find code is. When they enter the correct code, they automatically get their find logged. No logs to sign and no emails to send to CO. IMHO, it solves a huge problem with the old virtual caches by disconnecting the CO from the logging process. One thing that I noticed missing from the lab cache form was D/T ratings. I think they still need to have a D/T rating to go with these new virtual caches if they choose to go forward with it. And I'd like to see them add HTML ability to the desciption with image support. I've often thought that the plain micro with a log to finish out a puzzle cache was just a wasted effort. The primary thing is the puzzle. If you could make a virtual final location and format the virtual cache listing with all the bells and whistles we can currently use on regular caches, that would make puzzle placements so much easier and open up so many more possibilities. It would be a puzzle builder's dream.

(Ray bypassed it graciously for another in Homer) The purpose was to share the url directly with another player for a "custom-made adventure", but I've opted for the broad user base for a FTF or next-savvy finder treat. I'm interested to see what Groundspeak does with this. It seems like a trial for a new version of Virtuals. Almost like taking away the less-popular Waymarks and giving back the Virtuals. Time will tell. (This may be a "better mistake tomorrow" example) At any rate, back to the OP... Has anyone other than akgh519 given an "I <3 Geocaching" Lab a go?

We posted and shared a few of them within the -AK crew. I enjoyed them. It would be a way to bring back virtual's with a new way of verifying the cache find. I would like to see if they figure out the stats part of them. AW used one of the lab caches as her #600 but it did not register her log as the milestone cache.

It counts as a "find" in your total, but is completely taken out of your statistics. The Blog and FAQ do a good job of explaining how these Labs work.

I have done 'labs' at Megas. I am hoping that we might be able to do the temporary cache type labs I have done at those at local events. It would be fun to have an event specific cache and when the event is over so goes the cache

OK, so this is a pretty cool YouTube video about one particular Lab Cache.
Two things...
A pretty neat example of a Lab Cache.
A very nice example of what YouTube can do for expanding our reach to the public.
