Just a bit of lead time, everyone... National Public Lands Day will be on September 27, 2014. Don't let this date fall off of your calendar for 2014! This makes it a Saturday, and a perfect excuse for us to plan some kind of event in our areas to celebrate and recognize our local, state, and federal lands. National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. In 2013, 175,000 volunteers celebrated at nearly 2,200 public land sites in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. Geocachers from all over the Nation have been finding unique ways to bring people together to celebrate public lands. Without them, we'd have an awefully hard time playing our game! I know Alaska's geocachers have taken part in this event before, and the 2014 day will be the 21st year. It's time to start the next decade of partnership projects off with a bang! Start thinking about projects, and locations that we might want to focus on. I know some agencies that would welcome service projects with open arms...just sayin. We can find events already planned and take part. We can create our own events and post them on the pubilclandsday.org site. We can find ways to include GPS, Geocaching, and GeocacheAlaska! into either! CITO, trail maintenance, trail creation, and more can be coordinated with public land managers all over the state. From the Public Lands Day website: - NPLD educates Americans about the environment and natural resources, and the need for shared stewardship of these valued, irreplaceable lands
- NPLD builds partnerships between the public sector and the local community based upon mutual interests in the enhancement and restoration of America's public lands
- NPLD improves public lands for outdoor recreation, with volunteers assisting land managers in hands-on work
Visit www.publiclandsday.org/ for more information.

Hopefully, your employer will cooperate this year and there will be an event in Homer!

No joke. I think that Alaska Maritime could be an event location. I would likely be the coordinator and contact, and the event would be something that I would try to spearhead with our outreach & education team on board. The difficulty is that our lands are pretty far flung here at Alaska Maritime, and celebrating our lands would be best done on Adak or in Dutch Harbor! We can always have an event at our VC/HQ here in Homer, and I'd love to hear some ideas from folks about what they think might work. National Public Lands Day could also be a good weekend to coordinate our Fall 2014 Hobo CITO event, if we are still hoping to keep that series rolling.

See Celebrate Caching at BLM's Campbell Tract! for GeocacheAlaska's most recent participation. The event is also featured in the October "Around the State" newsletter. Note that any scheduled events must stand on their own merits and not be tied exclusively to the bigger event that would happen whether geocachers attended or not.
