If there is a homer event I think everyone that attends should receive a nano cache container that needs to be hidden in the greater homer area before they leave...some things for FF and NS to find!

STILL, Realistically, A Homer event probably wont draw cachers from farther than Anchorage, within the state of course Cavy as an exception, but publishing 6 months ahead Would probably draw more tourist cachers who would adjust their schedules to attend. That's what I'm worried about. A Homer event could be a hoot, but it is 4+ from Anchorage. That, essentially, is why trying to shoot for a 3-day weekend would be great. Some weekends have the 3-day built in from a holiday, but realistically it might have to mean that people would need to take a day off of work. <ohnoes! June is when the Kings start to show in the Fishing Hole, and that can always make for a fun and funny contest for the events. July is busiest. August slows down, but still somewhat busy until Labor Day. For a shorter trip, a campground in Soldotna/Kenai would be good to chop 1.5 hours from the drive back to Anchorage. Seward is another option, with it being 3 hours from Homer, about that from Anchorage, and less from Kenai/Soldotna. Hidden Lake is another 3-hour drive option. Campgrounds in the passes exist, but I have no idea what is available for sites, as I've never stayed there. Russian River campground is possible, but usually VERY busy until later on in the summer or early fall. I'd like to put a survey out there for folks to participate in for where they might want to see a campout on the Kenai Peninsula. Once we get where, we can talk more about when. When we have both we can talk events and planning details. Then we can start buying rockets, beer, and s'mores!

We have Survey Monkey on premium for the month of November for the elections and photo contest. Membership surveys are frequently conducted during this phase as well. It's not complicated at all to do a membership survey; just need to know what to ask.

It's not complicated at all to do a membership survey; just need to know what to ask. Let's chat once the last survey gets a chance to sink in. I might get something small written up to toss into the newsletter, and we could link to a survey about this, and/or other event plans. (?)

There won't be another newsletter out before our one-month Survey time expires. The club buys a month of survey access every November for doing the BoD election ballot and the Photo Contest voting. We have also published a membership survey in this time slot. LBK was talking about running the survey again, but I'll have to go back and check my notes as to wheather or not that was going to happen. I don't recall much interest from the BoD on a rerun of the survey, though I think it is a valuable tool to put out every year while we have our month of survey access.
It would be really easy to put in a series of questions about the Hobo CITO and the campout ideas to see what interest is there. Let's move that discussion to email between you, me and LBK...

Since we're already off topic - I'd be interested in adding some newsletter questions to a survey next time one happens. :-)

All that matters to me is that we're prepared for this campout. I think we might entice some folks to come from around the state if one of them just brings this camper:

I'll work on that.

That camper looks great, but even easier is to just bring AKLois&Clark. Their set up involved a few more tarps and a well-stocked kitchen that was set up before any of the rest of us arrived!

I must say, that was the most amazing sight I've seen. What ever we do lets just be sure and have a breakfast event and make sure they make it.

Tossing a blip back on the radar...
I'll be looking at my 2014 calendar after the new year. Eventually I'm just going to pick a weekend for this thing, but I think I have a pretty good idea about what folks think about timing.
My main concern is still to not step on our Hobo CITO and the Kenai Picnic timing.
And...I really want to find a way to get Anchorage and Fairbanks folks involved too. I know it's a haul, but maybe we have an every-other year location swap... Hmmm...

Bumping this thread for the new year. As we all start to plan our summers, I'm all ears to hear what people might think about a 2014 GeocacheAlaska! Campout Weekend.
For me July is out. August is a possibility. I was thinking of a place like Hidden Lake Campground, or possibly something nearer to Cooper Landing or in Summit or Turnagain Pass.
I'm all ears for input!

I like early or late...before Memorial Day or after Labor Day...less crowded!

I like early or late...before Memorial Day or after Labor Day...less crowded! Ok. Better to stay out of the way of my Silver fishing, too! I just want to be careful not to step on the toes of any Hobo planning underway thus far. Unless this replaces that Hobo, and we just do a spring breakup Hobo CITO? I'll need Joat to weigh in...

Hobo CITO is going to be the weekend right after Memorial Day weekend. There won't be any crowds because Memorial Day is about as early as it can be this year (May 26). So the next weekend is May 31 - June 1.
I think that this campout idea should being looking at August or June. If you try to go before Memorial Day, you'll have snow on the ground and no one will show up. If you wait until after Labor Day (Sept 1), the combination of cooler temperatures and hunting season is going to cut your attendance.
A campout that is trying to attract more people needs to be during warmer weather. June gives you a better chance of not having rain, but usually a larger crop of mosquitoes. July is too busy to find a camping place and there are all ready too many other things going on. August has a higher chance of rain, but there will be fewer mosquitoes and the camp grounds will start clearing up a little bit.
Personally, I would look at either August 16 or June 21 (in part because those are weekends I have off). Hunting seasons generally kick off on August 20 and a lot of the high pressure fisheries have wound down by mid-August, cutting the number of tourists loitering around. Our Hobo weekend last September was very light on attendees that late in the season.
