(popcorn)
Okay, now I've got popcorn, too. Let the discussion continue! Thank heavens someone is picking up the trash.

Circling back to the Cooper Landing region, it sounds like there is some desire to try and hit the NWR folks as a preemptive pro-caching olive branch. So, I'm figuring we can target the Hidden Lake campground. Good spot if it will be open and accessible (should be).
As to the dates, it appears we are pretty solid behind May 17-19 weekend. A little progress made on planning. I'll be hitting up my contacts over the next couple days.

NS - I see on HOWL's website that they have their annual week-long clean up ending May 4th, but I don't see the Homer Day listed. May 4th is a Saturday, though, so maybe it culminates on the City Clean-Up day? If you don't figure it out before then, I'll be at the chamber early next week and will talk to them about it. I thought I heard Libby say something about it being in conjunction with the CoC's citywide cleanup, but you've cast some doubt into my mind. Let's work on finding out for sure. If nothing else, I&O would be happy to support a CITO event at their place for the Hobo weekend. Otherwise, we could work with CACS and I&O for a beach cleanup. I could see starting at the parking lot at I&O and going along the boardwalk to Bishop's Beach... Do we want our own threads for each stop, or is it ok to keep that convo going here?

Once we get sites set for the CITO events and the camps figured out for each night (hobo potluck dinner events?), we may want to put the word out on the Groundspeak forums so that vacationers can work on fitting a possible attend log into their trip.
Firefly and I will work on things here in Homer, and I can help with Kenai Refuge, Joat. Let me know if you need/want that help, however!

Actually, haven't got to the popcorn yet, but I have pizza in the oven and a beer in hand! What's worse in my opinion is that he's got beer that he isn't sharing. I hope he picked up his empties before he zonked on the couch.

Yep, I CITO'd as I went. Had a kick up the feet and movie night to take a break from things. Watched Flight and Argo, which were both great movies, especially Argo.
I'll start with pinning down a city site and then move on to the NWR. I'll let you know if I need backup!

I've spoke with my contact at the Glacier Ranger Station in Girdwood and got a few bits of info which may help us.
First off, she checked on when the campgrounds, Russian River, and Cooper Creek open for use (may 22nd) but if snow is gone they sometimes open early without fees or services. She suggested speaking with Kenai wildlife Refuge, Seward district: Alex Mclain 288-7710, or his boss, John Eavis 288-7701.
Second, she suggested a we may have enough snow melted(but not all)& (maybe) at twenty mile or Turnagain pass. she also suggested where the "welcome to the Kenai peninsula" sign is, down by the inlet below the pass. It has a lot of clay pigeons and shot gun shells that need cleaned up, but it's state property and not hers. There's a beautiful trail there that has a few caches along it too. Very scenic area.

We're a "go" for Hidden Lake in the KNWR. As we finalize details, they'll sign us up as "refuge volunteers" and we can camp for free at the site on Saturday, and then do the clean up on Sunday morning.
Looks like it will be Soldotna Creek Park for the Saturday afternoon CITO.
Gettin' closer!

Hidden Lake, Hidden Lake, MMMMM, where's that? Couple miles off the Sterling Highway along Skilak Lake Road from the Cooper Landing end. Beautiful lake to paddle if the ice is gone. Fun islands to explore. Great EarthCache possibilities. Paved loop road keeps the dust down and great camper and tent sites with rocks for the kids to climb on. Nice hiking close by, too.

I was thinking about an Earthcache on the shear rock face on the west side of the southern dog leg of the lake. I can't remember the exact depth, but I've had the bow of the boat touching the rock wall and the depth sounder on the stern registering something like 100 feet of water. It also has one of the best campgrounds in the region.

Synopsis of the Hobo-CITO weekend of May 17-19, 2013:
Friday, May 17 at about 7pm will be a regular event (flash mob) in Homer to kick off the Hobo CITO series. This event will be the opening meeting point at a Homer area campground or eating establishment. Needs: Determine camping location for attendees from outside the area (and locals who want to pitch a tent). Need a dining location for everyone to gather for dinner. Need a host to organize and publish this event.
Saturday, May 18 at about 9-11am will be a CITO event in Homer to clean up an area. Beaches have been mentioned, but we need to narrow the focus down to a specific site. We need a host to organize and publish that event.
Saturday, May 18 at about 2-4pm will be a CITO event in Soldotna at the Soldotna Creek Park. I will be coordinating this site with the help of Soldotna City Parks & Rec department. Following this CITO event, we can gather at a local pub, er restaraunt, to get dinner before heading up the road.
Saturday evening, we decend upon Hidden Lake Campground near Cooper Landing. KNWR will have us set up as Refuge Volunteers so we can camp for free that night.
Sunday, May 19 at about 9-11am will be a CITO event at the Hidden Lake campground to clean up that area. This is being coordinated through KNWR HQ in Soldotna, who has given us full blessing to hold the first ever CITO event in the KNWR. I will take on the hosting and posting for this one.
Sunday, May 19 at about 1-3pm will be our regular Adopt-A-Highway CITO event in Girdwood. This event will be posted by GCAK and headed up by Fuzzy.
We'll need to establish dumping sites for the trash at all locations. We'll want a common cache listing theme for all the events; I'll get to work on that aspect. Any input into Hobo theme ideas would be good.
What else?

Scott - If I haven't already confirmed, I'm happy to play hostess to organize and publish the flash mob kick-off in Homer.

I've picked up lake trout trolling across the face, although that 100' + deep hole shelves up rapidly (taking tackle rapidly). That's one of our favorite campgrounds...

Suggest we come up with an artsy description of HOBO so people understand we're going with the romanticized version of that lifestyle. Here's where I envy the Aussies; they say they're going walkabout and folks understand. I wouldn't want anyone to think such pillars of community as SSO JOAT & NeverSummer have gone homeless... LOL!

These photos prove fuzzy's got a great sense of humor and a seriously charged up side-kick! All that energy is what makes these events a hoot to attend... that and the good company, of course!

Blazingpathways has played a HUGE role in the CITO events I've helped with. Also Flightriskak has played a superb role with me. I rarely work alone Who ever's ready to jump in the sillyness, let me know.

So, what we need to do is somehow link in those of us who will be traveling the whole CITO series from Homer all the way up into your overall "party" theme. We'll be a couple days without shower or shave, so it might not be too difficult. And we need some visual themes for the 4 CITO and 1 flash mob event listing. Any ideas?

Yeah, but watch out for blazingpathway's alter ego. She played a pretty convincing dominatrix complete with leather whip and Tomanoble submissive on a leash, cleverly portrayed as a lion tamer act, LOL!

We're one step closer to confirming a cleanup locale in Homer. Islands and Ocean Visitor Center might host us in the morning on May 18th. I have a meeting in the works to talk about it!
